Imperative Road Safety Ways For One And All
According to studies, it is alarming to note the statistics of road accidents. 1.46 lakh people lost their lives in 4.60 lakh road accidents across the country last year, which roughly translates to 400 deaths a day.
Last year the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, asked corporate firms to come forward and contribute to issues relating to road safety. He intended to write to corporate companies including all major automobile companies to promote road safety as a part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes.
Two mobile apps – e-Challan and m-Parivahan were released to promote road safety today using technology. e-Challan is a comprehensive digital solution for transport enforcement and traffic police for overall better traffic management.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor recently designed a special road safety awareness program for children, as part of Toyota Safety Education Program (TSEP) which is aimed at improving the road safety crisis in the country by inculcating safe road behavior in children and youth. The idea behind the same is to train young minds to bring out a positive behavioral change eventually towards making Indian roads safer.
Naveen Soni, Vice President – Toyota Kirloskar Motor said, “India loses about 3% GDP each year due to road mishaps. Beyond losing valuable lives, the social and economic impact caused by every road accident is sizeable to affect our country’s productivity.”
JK Tyre too has been actively involved in the cause of Road & Tyre Safety. Their activities aimed at spreading awareness about the importance of safe driving on Indian roads and awareness camps and nukkad nataks (street plays).
According to the data released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Mumbai, with 2,772 accidents in the year 2016, came right after Chennai, Delhi, Indore and Bangalore. In the previous year as well, the city had fared amongst the worst in road and transportation safety. The ministers and officials had appealed to people to take this issue more seriously.
Interactive sessions like quiz programs, demonstrations and skit competitions can be implemented to educate citizen’s rights on the city roads. The subject of road safety is important from the perspectives of the children with an aim to instill safety routines as their daily habits.
