IMAX Plans Major India Expansion with Focus on Regional Films and Strategic Partnerships

The CSR Journal Magazine

IMAX Corporation has unveiled an ambitious growth strategy in its latest quarterly report, positioning India as a key player in its global expansion efforts. This information emerged during the February 2026 Investor Presentation for the fourth quarter of 2025.

The comprehensive report indicates that IMAX operates 1,796 commercial theaters across 91 countries, holding a significant share of over 50% of the global premium format cinema market. India’s content landscape emerges as particularly appealing, given that an impressive 90% of the box office revenue generated in IMAX theaters within the country comes from local-language films. Acknowledging this trend, IMAX is actively pursuing partnerships to enhance the production and display of Indian-language movies in IMAX format, marking a crucial shift towards localization in a major film market.

Record Earnings and Future Releases

IMAX’s localized content strategy has already yielded substantial results. In 2025, the company generated $405 million from local-language films, a remarkable 66% increase compared to the previous year’s record. India is expected to play a pivotal role in sustaining this momentum, especially with plans to release 75 local-language titles globally in 2026. High-profile upcoming releases include the first part of ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Toxic,’ set to premiere next month on March 19.

Financial Strength and Industry Positioning

From a financial perspective, IMAX enters 2026 on solid ground, having reported $1.28 billion in global box office earnings for 2025, reflecting a year-over-year growth of 40%. The company is optimistic about reaching approximately $1.4 billion in revenue in 2026, with strong box office performance in markets like India directly contributing to this expansion.

Collaboration with Streaming Platforms

A noteworthy strategic shift outlined in the presentation involves IMAX’s collaboration with major streaming services to create theatrical experiences for new content. Partnerships with industry giants such as Apple, Amazon, and Netflix position IMAX as a premium venue for film launches, rather than as a rival to the streaming sector. An example includes the IMAX-exclusive release of Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’
