ICC Postpones Doha Board Meetings Amid Regional Unrest

The CSR Journal Magazine

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to cancel its planned board and committee meetings in Doha originally scheduled for March 25 to 27. This shift to an online format is in response to the intensifying conflict across West Asia. Ongoing military tensions in the area have caused significant disruptions to travel and airspace operations, necessitating the change in plans.

Adaptations for Future Meetings

Although the upcoming meetings will be conducted virtually, there is a possibility for in-person gatherings in April, contingent on the reopening of airspace in the region to ensure safe travel for board members.

Key Agenda Items for Doha Meetings

The Doha discussions were anticipated to convene ICC Board Directors, Chief Executives, committee members, and senior officials, focusing on several crucial topics within the organization’s governance agenda. Among the key issues was the future of the ICC’s global broadcasting rights, with the existing contract with JioStar expected to remain in effect until 2027.

Future Tours Programme Considerations

Another significant item on the agenda was the next Future Tours Programme (FTP). Preliminary discussions regarding the upcoming four-year international schedule have taken place informally, where board members have contemplated potential bilateral series and the broader structure of international cricket during this cycle.

Discussion on Olympic Qualification Pathways

Additionally, the qualification pathways for cricket’s return to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics were slated for discussion. As the event draws near, the ICC is focused on establishing criteria for how teams will qualify for the tournament.

Venue Selection and Regional Engagement

The Doha meetings were expected to be one of the major governance events of the year for the ICC, addressing various administrative, financial, and developmental issues related to the sport worldwide. In recent years, most ICC board meetings have been held in Dubai; however, Doha was chosen this time to reflect the organization’s growing involvement in the region. The ICC has been collaborating with the Qatar Cricket Association and the Qatar Olympic Committee to promote cricket in the country and enhance grassroots development.

Travel Uncertainties Force Transition to Virtual Meetings

Currently, the ICC’s decision to hold meetings online is a precautionary response to the prevailing uncertainty around travel and security in West Asia. The governing body will continue to monitor the situation before planning any future in-person gatherings.
