The Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) has increased scrutiny of quick-commerce operations by carrying out raids on 16 dark stores belonging to various retail platforms across Hyderabad. These actions were taken on September 30, as part of a broader initiative to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

Hygiene Violations Uncovered

The inspections revealed significant violations of hygiene standards, with the authorities identifying numerous health hazards. Inspection teams, comprising Food Safety Officers and police personnel, reported observations of dirty and rusted racks, cobwebs, and inappropriate flooring. Additionally, they found damaged and expired food items, spoiled vegetables exhibiting fungal infestation, and pest-infested food products.

In total, 15 samples were collected from these establishments on suspicion of adulteration. Formal notices for improvement and show-cause were issued to multiple outlets, signalling a serious approach to rectifying these issues. The TG SAFE has emphasised the urgent need for proper hygiene and adherence to safety regulations in these facilities.

As a result of the severe violations found during the inspections, TG SAFE suspended the licenses of four establishments, effectively halting their business operations. The infractions included excessive cockroach infestations, visibly rotten vegetables, and the improper storage of food alongside non-food items. These findings demonstrate a critical need for systemic changes in food safety practices.

Statewide Ban on Non-Dairy Paneer

In a related move to protect public health, the Telangana government has enacted a state-wide ban on the production, distribution, and sale of artificial and non-dairy analogue paneer for a period of one year. This ban, implemented earlier in September 2023, aims to eradicate unsafe food products from the market.

The Commissioner of TG SAFE confirmed that the ban was initiated under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. This decision specifically disallows the manufacture, processing, packing, storage, distribution, and sale of non-dairy paneer throughout Telangana, effective from September 10, 2026. The order has been officially documented in the gazette, asserting the state’s commitment to food safety.

This regulation aims to eliminate risks associated with the consumption of non-dairy products that may be harmful to consumers. The authorities are urging retailers and manufacturers to adhere strictly to these guidelines, prioritising the health of the public over profit.

Previous Enforcement Initiatives

Prior to the recent raids, TG SAFE also undertook an enforcement operation in Kukatpally, wherein 20 food establishments were inspected. During this drive, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licences of five establishments were suspended due to various food safety and hygiene violations.

This systematic enforcement initiative reflects a consistent approach by the Telangana government to ensure that food safety standards are upheld. The focus on compliance signifies a determination to provide safe and hygienic food options to consumers in Hyderabad.

Through these actions, TG SAFE is not only addressing immediate concerns regarding food safety but also establishing a framework for continuous oversight and accountability among food service establishments in the region.
