Hetmyer Rewrites History with 19 Sixes During T20 World Cup Run

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a notable display of power-hitting, West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer has set a new record by hitting 19 sixes within a single edition of the T20 World Cup. This achievement was marked during a crucial Super Eight match against India held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. With this performance, Hetmyer has surpassed the previous record held by Pakistan’s Sahibazada Farhan, who has hit 18 sixes during the tournament.

Tournament Standings and Stats

Sahibazada Farhan currently leads the tournament in runs scored, amassing a total of 383 runs, which includes two centuries along with his 18 sixes and 37 fours. Meanwhile, Hetmyer has accumulated 248 runs in the tournament, making him the fourth highest run-scorer. In addition to his record number of sixes, Hetmyer has also hit 16 fours in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Other Players in the Record List

Other West Indies players are also represented in the list of most sixes in a single T20 World Cup edition. Nicholas Pooran holds the third position with 17 sixes from the last edition, while Chris Gayle is in fourth with 16 sixes recorded in the 2012 edition. In a tie for fourth place, Rahmanullah Gurbaz from Afghanistan also contributed 16 sixes during the 2024 edition.

Super Eight Game Overview

In the Super Eight clash, the West Indies team was asked to bat first and managed to post a total of 195 runs for the loss of four wickets. A significant partnership of 76 runs for the fifth wicket between Jason Holder and Rovman Powell played a crucial role in building the team’s score. Powell scored 34 runs off just 19 deliveries, featuring two sixes and three fours, while Holder contributed 37 runs off 22 balls, including three sixes and two fours.

India’s Semi-Final Challenge

The match held great importance for both teams, as a victory would guarantee one of them the final semi-final spot in the tournament. With South Africa, New Zealand, and England already securing their places in the semi-finals, the clash against India becomes a do-or-die situation for the West Indies. While Hetmyer showcased his ability by hitting two sixes and a four, he was dismissed after scoring 27 runs from 12 balls when he edged a delivery that was angling away to the wicketkeeper.
