Heavy Rain Expected in Delhi-NCR as IMD Issues Alerts

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi is preparing for a significant change in weather conditions, with thunderstorms, lightning, rain, and the possibility of hail predicted across various regions of the national capital. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a district-level nowcast at 3:08 pm on Thursday, highlighting the potential for moderate thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and hail in certain areas of Delhi.

This nowcast is effective until 6:08 pm on October 29. The IMD’s bulletin indicates that moderate thunderstorms with lightning and hail are very likely to occur over parts of Central Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, and North Delhi. Additionally, thunderstorms featuring lightning and moderate rain are anticipated in areas such as South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, North West Delhi, and West Delhi.

Light rain or light thunderstorms, also accompanied by lightning and winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, are expected in South East Delhi, East Delhi, and South Delhi. This warning has been issued due to the ongoing influence of a combination of western disturbances and cyclonic circulations affecting weather patterns across northern India.

Impact of Western Disturbance

The IMD has reported that a western disturbance, characterised as a cyclonic circulation over northern Pakistan and surrounding areas, remains active at altitudes between 3.1 km and 4.5 km above mean sea level. An associated trough in the middle and upper tropospheric westerlies is also extending, enhancing the potential for adverse weather.

Furthermore, an induced upper-air cyclonic circulation is located over southern Punjab and adjacent areas at approximately 1.5 km above mean sea level. Another western disturbance over Jammu and nearby regions has merged with this larger system, intensifying its effects.

A cyclonic circulation over Haryana and adjoining Uttar Pradesh has shifted to northern Haryana and surrounding areas at about 0.9 km above mean sea level. These interacting weather systems are expected to contribute to rain, thunderstorms, and lightning across Delhi and its neighbouring regions.

Expected Temperature Changes

The weather department has forecast a decrease in maximum temperatures by 2-4 degrees Celsius over the next two days, followed by a potential increase of 2-3 degrees Celsius thereafter. The presence of cloud cover and rainfall is likely to keep daytime temperatures lower than usual.

Residents are advised to exercise caution during thunderstorms, avoiding shelter under trees and steering clear of exposed areas during lightning events. It is also recommended to secure any loose objects that could be displaced by strong winds. The district-level bulletin has flagged red- and orange-category alerts for certain parts of Delhi.

Meanwhile, a broader regional forecast has included a yellow alert for the entire Delhi-NCR area. As the weather situation develops, it remains crucial for residents to stay informed and prepared for the impending changes. The IMD will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as necessary to ensure public safety during this unsettled weather period.
