A gruesome incident took place in Uttar Pradesh at Lalitpur Medical College when dogs attacked and ate the head of a dead newborn child. The infant born on February 9, 2025, at District Women’s Hospital, required hospitalisation in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) because of being underweight and having congenital defects. The infant passed away during the evening hours.
Dr. Meenakshi Singh, the Chief Medical Officer of the hospital stated that the newborn experienced extreme health complications because of an underformed head, no spine, and 1.3 kg body weight. The heart rate of the infant was recorded at 80 beats per minute when doctors admitted him to the SNCU. However, the medical staff was uncertain about the newborn’s survival and the infant passed away during evening hours. The hospital gave the body to members of the family for burial.

Allegations of Negligence and Improper Handling of the Body

According to an NDTV report, hospital records showed the child’s aunt received the body after a receipt with her thumbprint was signed by standard procedures. Hospital staff discovered the reports of terrifying news about dog attacks happening within hospital grounds. During the investigation, the decapitated remains of the infant were located on the ground surface. Hospital staff verified the remains by the attached hospital tag and discovered that they belonged to the newborn.
Following the discovery, the hospital raised concerns that the family had abandoned the child’s body, suggesting that it may have been placed in a plastic bag, which ultimately led to the tragic attack by the dogs. The body had been removed from the campus before the police were notified, adding to the complications of the case.

Investigation into the Incident Amid Past Negligence Claims

Following the tragic event Principal D. Nath of Lalitpur Medical College established a four-member medical committee to investigate thoroughly while requiring a report within 24-hour. The medical facility has already received previous accusations of negligence. The hospital has previously faced multiple inquiries about its management and patient care practices along with safety issues and case handling complaints.
