GRSE Expands Global Presence with New Shipbuilding Contract in Germany

Kolkata, India: In a significant step towards strengthening its global footprint and promoting the “Make in India, Make for the World” initiative, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has signed a contract for the construction of the seventh and eighth Multi-Purpose Vessels (MPVs) with Germany-based Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei GmbH & Co. KG. The agreement was formalized in Hamburg, Germany, on March 24, 2025.

Strengthening Make in India on Global Stage

This latest contract is part of an ongoing ‘Option Agreement’ between the two entities, which includes the procurement of four additional MPVs from GRSE. With this, the shipyard is set to construct a total of eight vessels, amounting to an estimated order value of $108 million.
Each MPV, designed for versatile cargo transportation, will measure 120 meters in length and 17 meters in width, with a maximum draft of 6.75 meters. The vessels will have a capacity of 7,500 metric tonnes and feature a single cargo hold capable of carrying bulk, general, and project cargo. Additionally, containers will be transported on hatch covers, and the ships are specifically designed to accommodate large windmill blades on deck.
The contract was signed by Cdr Prasenjit Roy, IN (Retd), Deputy General Manager (Commercial Shipbuilding) of GRSE, and Mr. Thomas Rehder, Managing Director of Carsten Rehder, in the presence of Cmde PR Hari, IN (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director of GRSE, Mr. Jonas Meinhardt, Managing Director of Carsten Rehder, and other senior officials from both organizations.
