Google Introduces Fitbit Air, A Screenless Fitness Tracker Powered By AI

The CSR Journal Magazine

Google has launched the Fitbit Air, a new fitness tracker that prioritises AI-driven health insights over traditional smartwatch features. Priced at $100, the device is a lightweight wrist strap that does not include a display, notifications, or a clock. Rather than requiring users to frequently check a screen, the Fitbit Air tracks health metrics in the background, allowing for a more seamless user experience. The device is currently available for preorder and will officially hit the market on 26 May 2026.

In addition to the standard version, Google is releasing a special edition of Fitbit Air, co-designed with NBA star Stephen Curry, which will retail for $130. The new tracker is compatible with both Android and iPhone devices, providing a wider audience with access to its features. Google is positioning this launch as part of a broader shift towards software-led health solutions, evidenced by the redesign of the Google Health app and the expansion of its AI Health Coach.

Key Features and Functionality of Fitbit Air

The Fitbit Air aims to facilitate comfort and unobtrusive health monitoring. With no screen or buttons present, the tracker is specifically designed for all-day wear without causing distractions. The device continuously measures heart rate, tracks sleep stages, and generates Sleep Scores. It can also alert users to irregular heart rhythms, which may indicate conditions like atrial fibrillation (AFib). Users can access additional metrics such as heart rate variability (HRV), which is crucial for monitoring recovery and stress levels.

Additionally, the Fitbit Air boasts automatic workout tracking capabilities, enabling the detection of over 140 different activities, including running, cycling, and various gym exercises. Users benefit from features like weekly cardio load assessments, readiness scores, and silent vibration alarms to enhance their fitness routines. A notable feature, Smart Wake, aims to awaken users at an optimal moment in their sleep cycle, further enhancing their overall well-being.

Google claims that advancements in machine learning have improved the accuracy of the Fitbit Air by 15 per cent compared to previous models. An independent consumer perception study ranked the device as more comfortable than competing products, emphasising its lightweight design at just 12 grams.

Integration with Google Health App

The launch of Fitbit Air is accompanied by the transition from the existing Fitbit app to the new Google Health app, which will begin on 19 May 2026. Current Fitbit users will not need to take any action, as their historical data will automatically migrate to the updated platform. Google Fit users are also expected to make a shift to this new application later in the year.

This upgraded Google Health app consolidates health data from a variety of sources, including wearables, Apple Health, Health Connect, and uploaded medical records. Users will find a clear structure within the app, organised into four sections: Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health, providing a comprehensive overview of their health metrics.

The AI Health Coach, powered by Google’s Gemini platform, is now available for subscribers of Google Health Premium. This tool analyses user data to generate custom workout plans, recovery advice, and sleep insights. It can also evaluate uploaded medical documents, such as PDFs and photographs, to provide more personalised recommendations.

Potential Availability in India

As of now, Google has not disclosed whether the Fitbit Air will be available in India. However, given that previous Fitbit products have been sold in the country, there is a possibility that this new device may be launched in the future. The lack of official announcements leaves the timeline for Indian consumers uncertain, but interest remains high amongst potential users.
