Google Doodle Shines a Colourful Spotlight on India’s Independence Day

The CSR Journal Magazine

On this Independence Day, millions across India woke up to a homepage transformed by art. Google’s Doodle for 15th August 2025 isn’t just a wish—it’s a canvas of tradition and triumph, telling India’s story from its ancient art to modern victories. Created by Makarand Narkar and Sonal Vasave of Boomranng Studio, the Doodle is a celebration of India’s rich cultural heritage and its dazzling achievements on the world stage.

The artists chose to draw inspiration from something that’s quietly present in our everyday lives: tiles. These aren’t mere design elements—they are slices of history, found in old palaces and humble homes, sacred spaces, and colourful courtyards. Each letter of the word ‘Google’ is thoughtfully hand-crafted as a different tile, each rooted in a unique Indian tradition, each bursting with symbolism.

The Doodle starts strong with its first letter ‘G’, decked out in the famous Jaipur blue pottery style from Rajasthan. The swirling blue florals are more than eye-catching—they are a salute to the state’s centuries-old art that has put India on the artist’s map. Next, we see an ‘O’ adorned with a spaceship flying above intricate flowers—this tile honours India’s impressive journey from the days of Aryabhata to the success stories of Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan. India’s forays into space are not just technical— they are woven with dreams and hope, blending the poetry of the skies with the discipline of science.

Moving forward, cricket, the sport that unites a billion hearts, gets its own spotlight. The second ‘O’ serves up cricket bats and a red ball, packed inside rhythmic geometric designs. Cricket is not just a sport in India; it is woven into the laughter of children in narrow lanes, the tears of loss and the dance of victory. The ‘G’ that follows is painted with another regional motif, connecting viewers to the patterns their grandparents may have seen on local tiles or temple floors.

Chess, the ancient game with roots in our soil, finds pride of place on the ‘L’. The chess piece here stands as a tribute to India’s grandmasters, from legends like Viswanathan Anand to young prodigies such as D Gukesh, who are taking the game to new global heights. And to complete this vibrant picture, the final ‘E’ is rolled into a classic cinema reel. Here is the beating heart of Indian cinema, echoing from Mumbai’s film sets to film festivals far abroad, capturing tales, songs, and dances that connect every Indian with their roots.

But why did the artists select these particular themes? Each element in the Doodle holds a mirror to a piece of India’s journey. Tiles as a medium were chosen because they carry generations of craftsmanship and stories. The styles come from places as distant as Jaipur and West Bengal, highlighting how India’s diversity is its unity. Space stands for scientific ambition, cricket for passion and teamwork, chess for intellect and strategy, and cinema for the collective imagination of the nation.

Together, these six tiles are more than shapes and colours. They reflect the nation’s spirit—where tradition meets innovation, folk art meets global acclaim, and every achievement builds on the dreams of millions. With this Doodle, Google invites not just India but the entire world to see how the threads of cricket, cinema, science, and art are stitched together in the grand tapestry of our independence. For citizens, it is as much a celebration of freedom as a reminder of our endless ability to create, inspire and lead.

As flags flutter and kites soar, the Doodle stands as a reminder: India’s independence is a living story, as vivid and diverse as the art on its walls and the dreams in its eyes.
