From Woodwork to World Stage: The Hardy Singh Story

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hardy Singh’s childhood in Dubai was shaped by the smell of sawdust and the sound of hammers. Born into a carpenter’s family, his world seemed destined to revolve around woodwork. But even as a boy, Hardy’s eyes were set on a different stage. At ten, he stumbled across Bhangra—its infectious beats and boundless energy struck something deep within him. What others saw as just a dance, Hardy embraced as a calling.

He practiced relentlessly, often sneaking in moves between schoolwork and family chores. Bhangra wasn’t just rhythm and movement for him; it was joy, identity, and freedom. By 2011, that passion took shape when Hardy co-founded Pure Bhangra. What began as a handful of friends dancing for the love of it grew into a global team of more than 30 performers, united by a single mission: to take Punjabi culture to the world.

And take it he did. Hardy has performed at Expo 2020 Dubai, one of the world’s most watched events, and shared the stage with Punjabi legends like Diljit Dosanjh and Gippy Grewal. Each performance wasn’t just entertainment—it was a reminder that Bhangra belonged on the biggest stages. Recognition followed. Hardy was named among the Top 100 Most Influential Sikhs Under 30 and appointed the U.S. ambassador for Sikh Expo, solidifying his role as a cultural torchbearer.

But perhaps the moment that defined him most wasn’t in an arena or stadium—it was on the bustling streets of New York. A video of Hardy breaking into Bhangra in Times Square went viral, watched by millions across the globe. For him, it wasn’t just about the dance; it was about showing that culture could thrive anywhere, even in the heart of the world’s busiest city.

Today, Hardy Singh is more than a performer. He is a storyteller, a teacher, and an inspiration. He has led workshops in over 35 countries, teaching people from Tokyo to Toronto how to lose themselves in the beat of the dhol. Along the way, he has collected awards, but what drives him most is pride—pride in his roots and the chance to share them with others.

From a carpenter’s son in Dubai to a Bhangra icon on the world stage, Hardy’s journey is a testament to dreaming beyond boundaries. His story reminds us that passion doesn’t just change lives—it can unite cultures, one beat at a time.
