From Kashmir to Kanyakumari: RSS Flags Off ‘Dhwaj Yatra’ from Srinagar’s Lal Chowk

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has initiated a nationwide ‘Dhwaj Yatra’, marking its symbolic commencement from the historic Lal Chowk in Srinagar. The route of the yatra stretches from Kashmir in the north to Kanyakumari in the south, aiming to travel through various cities and regions across India.

After the ceremonial start at Lal Chowk, located in the heart of Srinagar, the initial phase of the yatra concluded at the nearby Tourist Reception Centre. Here, the participants transitioned from foot march to vehicular travel for the subsequent legs of the journey to other states and regions.

Objective of the Nationwide Yatra

The ‘Dhwaj Yatra’, which translates to ‘flag march’, is organized as a symbolic event reflecting unity and national integration. The initiative involves carrying the saffron flag across different regions of India as part of the RSS’s outreach and mobilization efforts. The voyage is intended to cover multiple states, engaging with local communities along the way.

Historic Significance of Lal Chowk

The selection of Lal Chowk as the starting point holds historical and cultural significance. Often seen as a landmark symbol in the Kashmir Valley, the site has witnessed several pivotal moments in India’s post-independence history. Initiating the yatra from this location is viewed as a deliberate gesture aimed at underscoring national unity.

Logistics and Participation

Participants gathered at Lal Chowk early in the morning for the flag hoisting ceremony and formal launch of the yatra. Following the event, they proceeded towards the Tourist Reception Centre, from where they embarked on various assigned routes using vehicles. The yatra is structured to span several weeks, reaching the southernmost tip of the Indian mainland in Kanyakumari.

Security arrangements were heightened in the area to ensure smooth conduct of the events in Srinagar. Local authorities coordinated closely with event organizers to maintain public order and manage traffic during the ceremonial gathering. No disruptions were reported during the inaugural proceedings.

Upcoming Phases of the Yatra

As the yatra progresses, it is expected to traverse significant cultural and geographical landmarks, with scheduled stops in various districts and towns. Local level events have been planned en route, where participants will engage in flag-hoisting ceremonies and public interactions to promote the themes of unity and service.
