FASTag Annual Pass Price Set to Rise from April 1

The CSR Journal Magazine

The price of the FASTag annual pass will increase from Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,075 starting April 1, 2026. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has confirmed that this 2.5 percent hike is tied to inflation adjustments. The annual pass is intended for private vehicle owners who regularly travel on national highways, allowing up to 200 toll crossings or use for one year, whichever occurs first. Despite this price rise, the FASTag annual pass continues to present substantial savings for frequent travelers and facilitates a swift, cashless toll payment process.

Understanding the FASTag Annual Pass

The FASTag annual pass is available for various private vehicles, including cars, jeeps, and vans. Instead of incurring toll charges for each crossing, users can purchase an annual pass that permits multiple highway crossings within a designated limit. The pass encompasses 200 toll trips over the course of a year, offering a more economical solution compared to the standard toll fees at each plaza. Currently, over 5 million users have acquired FASTag annual passes, representing approximately 28 percent of all car toll transactions conducted on highways in India.

Changes to FASTag Toll Payment System in 2026

Several updates regarding the FASTag toll payment system are slated for implementation in 2026. There will be a shift toward mandatory cashless payments at toll plazas. Drivers will have the option to pay either using FASTag or via Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Vehicles that do not utilize FASTag may incur an additional fee of 25 percent through UPI or may be required to pay double the standard toll amount in cash. Another significant change involves the integration of the FASTag registration process with the VAHAN vehicle database. This will allow for direct verification of vehicle details for new FASTag applications, eliminating the necessity for a separate Know Your Vehicle (KYV) procedure. Authorities also plan to establish penalties for users who do not adhere to these new regulations.

Rationale Behind the Modest Price Increase

The increase in the FASTag annual pass fee is modest, translating to an additional Rs 75 per year. For individuals who travel frequently, the cost per trip remains significantly lower compared to standard toll charges. In fact, those using the annual pass may find themselves paying approximately Rs 15 per trip, depending on their individual travel habits. This pricing structure maintains the appeal of the pass for regular users of national highways. The adjustment in pricing is aligned with inflation based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) and is exclusively applicable to the annual pass.
