The Direct Benefit Transfer or DBT is an attempt to change the mechanism of transferring subsidies launched by the Government of India on 1 January 2013. This program aims to transfer subsidies directly to the people through their bank accounts. It is hoped that crediting subsidies into bank accounts will reduce leakages, delays, etc

The change that happened since the BJP Govt came to power was the students were promised that the Govt would take care of the expenses of their education including the costs of their books and uniforms. But the condition for enjoying the benefits of this was having a bank account. A lot of students then went for opening their bank accounts. Soon after, there was a compulsion of having Aadhar Cards for opening bank accounts. Students then ran to get their Aadhar Cards. Somewhere in the middle of this entire process, students couldn’t reap the benefits of this scheme.

Ekurga village is located in Latur Tehsil of Latur district in Maharashtra, India. It is situated 30km away from sub-district headquarter Latur and 30km away from district headquarter Latur. As per 2009 statistics, Ekuraga is the gram panchayat of Ekurga village. It has a total population of 3,209 peoples. There are about 619 houses in Ekurga village. Latur is nearest town to Ekurga which is approximately 30km away.

Working on the same lines, Dhiraj Deshmukh ended a prolonged darkness followed by power cut in Zilla Parishad Schools in Latur by paying the pending electricity bills and bringing lights back to the students’ lives.  The 3 schools which were in the dark were the Ekurga Zilla Parishad School, Ankoli Zilla Parishad School and the Bhoira Zilla Parishad School comprising of 269, 229 and 225 students respectively. The electricity bills which were to be paid by the 3 schools were that of about Rs. 33,000.  Due to non-payment of the amount, the power supply top these schools were cut off resulting in the children sitting in the classrooms without lights and fans.

Speaking about the same Dhiraj said, “Development is not about assurances. It is about actual work. Development does not lie in the progress of those who constitute of a vote bank. It lies in the progress of the children who are the future of this country. We can’t afford to let their education suffer at any cost”.

Besides all the schemes the govt can roll out, or the tireless efforts of NGOs, individual social responsibility can go a long way. Either people in power or the power vested in the people is what can bring transformation on the ground. Education and skilling is the way forward for the nation and every individual looking to be empowered and grow together with the country.
