Dubai Crown Prince Commends Indian Pilot Following Cockpit Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

Dubai Crown Prince Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has publicly praised Captain Smit Machchhar for his bravery during a recent incident aboard a Flydubai flight. The pilot was reportedly attacked by his co-pilot during the flight, which was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. This act of violence raised serious concerns about flight safety, yet Machchhar’s swift actions reportedly prevented a larger catastrophe.

Details of the Incident

On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Captain Machchhar faced a life-threatening situation when his co-pilot allegedly used a crash axe in an unprovoked attack. This incident occurred while the aircraft was at cruising altitude, significantly jeopardising the safety of the 174 passengers on board.

According to the UAE Attorney General, Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, the co-pilot’s actions have been described as an attempt to commit a “terrorist act.” In a courageous move, despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door. This action allowed crew members and passengers to intervene and restrain the co-pilot, bringing the situation under control before any further escalation could occur.

Following the emergency, the aircraft reportedly descended rapidly from 34,000 feet to below 17,000 feet, sending out distress signals. It made an emergency landing at Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where medical assistance was provided.

Support for Captain Machchhar

The Indian Embassy in the UAE has confirmed that Captain Machchhar is currently recovering and receiving medical attention. In a statement released on social media platform X, the embassy affirmed their commitment to supporting Machchhar’s family during this challenging time. They acknowledged the cooperation from local authorities and expressed their gratitude toward the UAE government for its prompt medical response.

Hamdan bin Mohammed, who also serves as the UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, visited the pilot in the hospital. He shared photographs from the visit and expressed heartfelt sentiments about Machchhar’s valiant efforts. Hamdan stated that the pilot had demonstrated exceptional courage and a deep sense of responsibility, epitomising the values of the UAE as a nation rooted in compassion, peace, and humanity.

The Indian mission has reiterated its support for the pilot’s speedy recovery and continues to maintain close contact with his family, providing necessary assistance. Good wishes from various sectors are pouring in, underscoring the significance of community solidarity in times of crisis.

Continuing Investigation by UAE Authorities

The UAE is currently leading an investigation into the incident to further understand the motives behind the co-pilot’s actions. Official statements reveal that the flight crew acted decisively to avert a potential tragedy that could have resulted from the assault. At this stage, authorities are exploring the background of the co-pilot, identified in some reports as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami.

Following the initial treatment received in Tabuk, Captain Machchhar has been moved to Abu Dhabi for further medical care. Both UAE and Indian officials have indicated that he is on the road to recovery, providing a source of relief amidst the alarming circumstances of the flight.

This incident has prompted discussions on aviation safety and security, as authorities work to implement measures aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future. The emphasis remains on ensuring that such acts of violence do not compromise the integral safety of air travel.
