Drunk Driver Hits Traffic Constable, Drags Him for One Kilometer in Hyderabad

The CSR Journal Magazine

A case of suspected reckless driving led to chaos in Hyderabad’s Gachibowli area on Saturday morning when a speeding Mercedes-Benz struck a vehicle and allegedly dragged a traffic constable on its bonnet while attempting to escape.

The incident transpired near the IIIT Junction and has been linked to 24-year-old Gurrampati Tarun, a resident of Narsingi.

Details of the Collision

Preliminary investigations by the Hyderabad City Police indicated that Tarun was navigating the luxury vehicle at excessive speeds after consuming alcohol. He first collided with another car.

When a traffic constable on duty signaled him to halt, Tarun reportedly accelerated, causing the officer to fall onto the vehicle’s bonnet. The constable was dragged for nearly a kilometer before other motorists and law enforcement personnel intervened and stopped the car.

Injuries and Medical Response

The constable sustained minor injuries during the incident and was promptly transported to a nearby medical facility. Reports indicate that his health condition is stable.

Legal Action Taken

A breathalyzer test conducted on Tarun revealed alcohol levels significantly above the legal limit. Following the incident, police registered two separate cases against him, involving charges such as rash and negligent driving, putting lives at risk, and obstructing a public servant in the line of duty. These charges are in accordance with relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act.

Arrest and Court Proceedings

The accused was apprehended and subsequently presented before a magistrate, who ordered a 14-day judicial custody. He has since been relocated to Kandi Jail in the Sangareddy district. Authorities are currently analyzing CCTV footage from the junction and adjacent areas as part of the ongoing investigation.
