Dera Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Granted Parole for the 17th Time

The CSR Journal Magazine

Dera Sacha Sauda leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has received a 21-day parole, marking his 17th such release since 2020. He left Rohtak’s Sunaria jail on Tuesday at approximately 6.05 am in a convoy heading towards the Dera Sacha Sauda ashram located in Sirsa. During this parole period, it is anticipated that he will remain at the ashram.

Recent Paroles and Furloughs

This latest release follows a 40-day parole granted on May 26 of the same year. Previously, during that interval, he was also accommodated at the Sirsa ashram before returning to Sunaria jail. Since his initial parole in October 2020, Ram Rahim has journeyed through a series of temporary releases, marking a notable pattern over the past few years.

Following his release on May 26, he returned to jail after completing his parole period. His release history includes a one-day furlough in October 2020, succeeded by another one-day parole in May 2021. In addition, he was granted a 21-day stint in February 2022 and a 30-day release in June of that year.

For instance, in January 2024, he was granted a generous 50-day parole followed by 20 days in October. Similar 30-day releases followed in January and April 2025, alongside a 40-day duration in August 2025. Notably, he has also had two additional 40-day paroles in January and May 2026.

Background on Convictions

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was convicted in 2017 for the sexual assault of two women who were his disciples. He is currently serving a prison sentence of 20 years, split into two consecutive 10-year terms for each of the rape cases. Additionally, he has received a life sentence in connection with the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati.

The repeated grants of parole to Ram Rahim have drawn considerable public attention. The series of furloughs raises questions about the nature and conditions under which such releases are determined, especially given the severity of his convicted crimes. Each release has occurred under varying circumstances and often coincides with significant events for the Dera Sacha Sauda community.

As Ram Rahim embarks on this current parole, it remains to be seen how the upcoming weeks will unfold. His influence within the Dera community continues to be a sensitive topic, often scrutinised by both supporters and critics alike. While he is under legal sentence, the nature of his paroles offers insights into the temporary allowances provided to individuals in similar situations within the Indian judicial framework.
