Delhi is gearing up for an influx of foreign dignitaries as the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit is scheduled to be held on September 12 and 13, 2026. With significant arrangements in place, security and traffic measures will be heightened across the national capital. This initiative aims to ensure smooth proceedings for the international event, which is expected to attract numerous heads of state and international delegations.

In anticipation of these events, various areas within the city will experience different levels of accessibility, impacting daily commuters and residents alike. Consequently, significant changes will take place from September 11 to 13, necessitating public awareness and preparation.

Closure of Educational and Government Institutions

On September 11, all government, government-aided, and recognised unaided private schools under the Delhi Directorate of Education will be closed. This decision has been made to accommodate the extensive security operations needed for the summit, allowing authorities to manage the increased traffic and movement of dignitaries effectively.

Moreover, all Delhi government offices along with public sector undertakings under the National Capital Territory (NCT) will also be shut down on the same date. The Lieutenant Governor has officially declared this day as a public holiday to facilitate the preparations for the summit, giving government employees a break from work amidst the significant security measures being implemented.

These closures of educational and government institutions are meant to streamline the overall security process, allowing law enforcement to concentrate on the dignitaries’ movements without added pressures from daily school and office routines.

Operations and Travel Advisory

Despite the closures, banks across Delhi will continue to remain operational on September 11, as it is not considered a bank holiday according to the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday listing. Additionally, private offices will function as usual, albeit employees should prepare for possible delays due to traffic restrictions associated with VVIP convoys.

Delhi Metro services are also expected to run normally during the summit, aiding commuters. However, it is noteworthy that the Delhi Metro Museum situated at the Supreme Court Metro station will not be accessible to visitors for the duration of the summit from September 11 to 13.

Traffic diversions will be commonplace as bus services may experience regulation due to the movements of foreign dignitaries. Cab aggregators remain operational but with recommendations for their drivers to avoid pick-up and drop-off in restricted zones during the summit period.

Commuter Challenges and Traffic Management

Those travelling from Noida and eastern sections of Delhi towards Pragati Maidan and central regions could face significant delays due to restrictions on crucial connecting roads. Similarly, commuters from Dwarka and western parts of Delhi may also encounter disruptions while heading towards the airport or central areas.

Additionally, the movement of the Egyptian delegation is likely to further strain traffic in south Delhi, especially during peak hours as they travel from their accommodation to central venues.

Individuals arriving at airports, railway stations, or inter-state bus terminals are strongly advised to plan for extra travel time and consider using Delhi Metro services whenever possible to counteract potential traffic issues.

Parking restrictions will apply within 200 metres of designated roads, urging motorists to utilise official parking facilities rather than parking against regulations. The Delhi Traffic Police have coordinated with online navigation services to ensure real-time updates on diversions and alternative routes, providing commuters with necessary guidance throughout the summit dates.
