Delhi Government Approves Nine Wildlife Inspectors for Conservation Efforts

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi Government has announced the establishment of nine new positions for Wildlife Inspectors within the Forests and Wildlife Department. This decision comes under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and aims to bolster wildlife conservation amid growing urban environmental concerns.

These newly created roles are classified at Level-6 of the Pay Matrix, with a salary range between Rs 35,400 and Rs 1,12,400 as per the 7th Central Pay Commission. This initiative signifies the government’s dedication to enhancing the protection of biodiversity in the region.

The amendment of the Recruitment Rules for these posts has been sanctioned by Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and has been officially published in the Gazette, reflecting a systematic approach to improve administrative functionality in wildlife management.

Rationale Behind the Initiative

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa remarked on the necessity of these reforms to fortify environmental protection efforts within the capital. He stated that deploying Wildlife Inspectors across various divisions in Delhi is an essential move, facilitating prompt action against poaching and better management of human-wildlife conflicts.

Prior to this development, the Wildlife Department was constrained by just one Wildlife Inspector at its Headquarters, while the four field divisions operated without dedicated personnel. This inadequacy hindered effective ground-level enforcement and made it challenging to address illegal activities or manage conflicts effectively.

The recruitment process for eight of the nine posts will be conducted through direct recruitment by the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB), ensuring that qualified candidates can fill these critical roles filled with responsibility.

Impact on Wildlife Conservation

The appointment of these inspectors is expected to significantly strengthen the capacity of the Wildlife Department. Their presence will enhance the effectiveness of wildlife protection operations, the prevention of illegal activities, as well as the management of human-wildlife conflicts within the urban environment.

Moreover, this initiative is poised to create a substantial impact on biodiversity management across Delhi. With dedicated personnel, the government aims to address challenges like habitat destruction and wildlife poaching more efficiently, building a more robust institutional framework for urban ecosystem sustainability.

Minister Sirsa iterated that the involvement of these Wildlife Inspectors will ensure that Delhi’s rich biodiversity is safeguarded and thriving in the face of ongoing urban development pressures. By focusing on law enforcement and habitat protection, this programme aims to contribute positively to the overall health of the city’s environment.
