Delhi Airport First in India to Receive ‘Net Zero Waste to Landfill’ Platinum certification

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi has been awarded the IGBC Net Zero Waste to Landfill Platinum Certificate for Terminals 1, 2, and 3. The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) on Friday claimed that IGI Airport is the first airport in India to receive such recognition during its operational phase.

DIAL is the current operator of the Delhi Airport. DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar told national media, “This recognition is not just a certificate — it is a validation of DIAL’s unwavering commitment to building a future-ready, climate-resilient airport ecosystem. We are proud to set the benchmark for Indian aviation in responsible waste management and environmental governance. Our adaptability and proactive approach ensure that we remain at the forefront of responsible and sustainable aviation.”

The Platinum Certificate was conferred by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).

Delhi Airport Waste Management

Delhi Airport’s waste management infrastructure includes a two-bin and four-bin segregation system, material recovery facilities, organic waste composters, and a real-time waste tracking mechanism — collectively enabling maximum resource recovery and minimal dependence on landfills.

The ninth-busiest airport in the world, the Indira Gandhi International Airport also became the first in the country to achieve net-zero carbon emission airport status. It received a Level 5 certification for this achievement. Additionally, the terminal buildings at Delhi Airport are already certified at the highest platinum level by both the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

The airport, operated by DIAL, states that approximately 95% of solid waste, including food waste and recyclables, is diverted away from landfills through proper source segregation, recycling, and in-house composting. The airport also adheres to all required green building standards.
