Deepak Patel Sets 80% Success Benchmark in Artificial Insemination

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant achievement for India’s dairy sector, 63-year-old Deepak Patel, an Artificial Insemination (AI) technician from Vaheval, a tribal village in Gujarat’s Surat district, has recorded an unparalleled conception success rate of 80% in cattle. This remarkable statistic sets a new national benchmark in the industry. Recently, Patel received a call from a local farmer seeking his assistance for artificial insemination of a cow. Upon examination, Patel advised the farmer to delay the procedure for optimal results, illustrating the careful and strategic approach that underpins his extraordinary success.

Since 1999, Deepak Patel has been associated with the Surat District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd, better known as Sumul Dairy. Over the past two decades, he has consistently achieved the highest AI conception rates in the sector, earning him the nickname “Miracle Boy” among his peers. Deepak attributes his skills to his upbringing, stating, “My parents were farmers and engaged in animal husbandry. I learnt some skills and knowledge from them.”

Experts have noted that the average conception rate for artificial insemination in India typically falls between 35% and 40%. In contrast, Patel’s remarkable 80% rate significantly surpasses both state and national averages. His work has notably enhanced reproductive efficiency among livestock, directly contributing to increased milk production and improved farmers’ incomes in his region. Ajitsinh Jadav, Head of the Veterinary Department at Sumul Dairy, mentioned that the organization conducts approximately 500,000 AI procedures annually, with an average conception rate of 53%. In this context, Patel’s achievement stands out remarkably.

Former Managing Director of Sumul Dairy, PR Pandey, highlighted that Patel’s talent was recognized early, leading to his appointment as an AI technician in 1999. “He has maintained the highest AI conception rate in the country at 80%,” Pandey remarked, emphasizing the transformative impact Patel has had on dairy farming. Sumul Dairy sources milk from the Surat and Tapi districts and is one of the 21 district unions that operate under the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited, which promotes dairy products under the Amul brand.

The process of artificial insemination involves collecting semen from genetically superior male animals and introducing it into female animals during their heat period to enhance breed quality, control disease transmission, and increase milk output. Patel’s high success rate has translated into significant economic advantages for farmers. An 80% conception rate implies that out of every 100 inseminated animals, 80 can become pregnant, resulting in a higher number of calves and, consequently, greater milk production. For instance, if a farmer inseminates 10 buffaloes and achieves 8 pregnancies, there will be 8 calves available for milk production or sale, enhancing financial returns for the farmer.

Increased successful pregnancies lead to a rise in lactating animals within herds, augmenting overall milk production. Even a small rise in conception rates can substantially bolster milk supply on regional and national scales. Patel’s contributions have helped lower calving intervals and reproductive costs, while also yielding better-quality calves and higher milk yields, thereby promoting greater financial stability for farmers.

The noteworthy impact of Deepak Patel’s work is chronicled in PR Pandey’s book titled “The Miracle Boy-Deepak Patel.” A documentary film, “Safal Bijdan,” produced by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), is being screened to train AI technicians across the country. Patel’s distinguished contributions have garnered multiple awards at state and national levels, earning recognition from Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, further underscoring the importance of his work in the dairy sector.

India’s dairy industry has emerged as a global leader, benefitting from the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Cooperative Minister Amit Shah. Gujarat, as a key player in this industry, continues to set new standards in dairy excellence under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
