Deadly Drone Strike Hits US Base in Kuwait, 6 Soldiers Killed, 20 Injured Amid Rising Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

Just two days after military operations were initiated against Iran by the US and Israel, a tragic incident occurred at a US base in Kuwait. A drone strike resulted in the deaths of six American soldiers at the Shuaiba port facility. This attack marks the deadliest incident involving US forces since 2021 and has raised serious concerns regarding the safety and preparedness of troops stationed in the region.

Survivors from the attack have publicly contradicted the account provided by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. They reported that the base was inadequately fortified and left the soldiers vulnerable to aerial threats. A member of the unit stated it was misleading to suggest that a ‘squirter’ drone had evaded the base’s defences, insisting that, in reality, their unit was unprepared to defend itself.

Additionally, the attack injured approximately twenty other personnel stationed at the base. Despite being in a precarious situation, the troops reportedly acted swiftly to respond to the crisis, potentially preventing further casualties during the chaotic aftermath.

Conditions at the Base

The soldiers involved were part of the 103rd Sustainment Command. Prior to the Iranian attack, the Trump administration had relocated a majority of US personnel from bases in Kuwait to Jordan and Saudi Arabia to enhance their safety against Iranian missile strikes. The soldiers remaining at Shuaiba reportedly believed they would return home within a short time, leading them to leave personal belongings behind.

Subsequently, the situation drastically changed when Iranian resilience prolonged the conflict beyond initial expectations. After forty days of hostilities, a two-week ceasefire was eventually agreed upon. The decision to keep some troops near the conflict zone led to skepticism among the surviving soldiers, who felt exposed and ill-positioned.

Describing the base, one soldier noted it was outdated, constructed before the rise of modern drone warfare. Though equipped with basic defensive structures, such as steel-reinforced barriers to withstand rocket attacks, it lacked adequate protection from aerial drone strikes.

Recollections of the Attack

In the moments leading up to the drone strike, the soldiers were alerted to the incoming threat when sirens sounded. They sought refuge in a cement bunker, experiencing the anxiety common during military alerts. However, after initially receiving an all-clear signal, they returned to their posts, only to be caught off guard by the drone strike that followed shortly thereafter.

One soldier recounted the sheer chaos of the event, describing how the explosion left a disorienting impact. The attack was executed by one of Iran’s Shahed drones, which hit the US base directly, resulting in immediate devastation. Survivors described scenes of bloodshed and severe injuries, emphasising the brutality of the attack.

The explosion not only caused fatalities but also inflicted critical injuries on many personnel, with descriptions of heavy bleeding and multiple injuries to limbs and heads. The aftermath saw dark smoke rising from the site, with damage evident across the base, underscoring the vulnerability of the location.
