CSR News: Over 20,000 Youth from Barmer Trained Across 15 Sectors and 35 Job Roles

Cairn Oil & Gas, part of Vedanta Group and India’s largest private oil and gas exploration and production company, has been undertaking a wide range of programs to bridge the skill gap in India by nurturing young talent and preparing them for a brighter future and a dynamic job market. The company has provided skill-based training programs to nearly 25,000 Youth across its operational areas enabling thousands of them to become entrepreneurs and many others to gain employment.

Through its two dedicated training centres in Rajasthan – Cairn Enterprise Centre (CEC) in Barmer and Cairn Centre of Excellence (CCOE) in Jodhpur – Cairn has been driving skill development through vocational programs focused on enhancing employability, entrepreneurship and generating sustainable livelihoods for youth. To date, the company has successfully trained over 20,000 youth from the region, across 15 sectors and 35 job roles through its Barmer Hub Center and 56 spoke centres.

CEC has achieved an 80% placement rate since its inception, with a strong 70% job retention rate, creating a lasting impact on the quality of the lives of the local youth. More than 35% of the skilled youth have started their own small businesses in the region, creating entrepreneurship, and self-reliance. Notably, 25% of the beneficiaries are Women, employed across sectors such as Beauty & Make-up, Banking, Masonry, and Computers, highlighting company’s continuous efforts towards gender inclusion at the regional level.

Bridging the Digital Divide

This year, World Youth Skills Day is centred around the theme “Youth Empowerment through AI and Digital Skills”, emphasising the importance of training youth in artificial intelligence and digital technologies to access opportunities in the evolving digital economy.

– Cairn introduced e-kaksha initiative in 2020 to provide digital education to students in Rajasthan, with access to digital resources and library. The company aimed to reach 9 million students by 2030 but has already surpassed the target touching over 23 million students since the inception of its program.

– To promote digital literacy, Cairn Oil & Gas has installed a digital classroom in Sarupathar College in the Golaghat district of Assam. The classroom is serving the ~4,000 enrolled students, offering them digital exposure and an opportunity to experience modern technology for the first time. The digital classroom has evolved into a comprehensive skill development centre, paving the way towards a brighter future for the students.

Turning Dreams into Reality

One of the transformative stories is of Bharat Kumar, an alumnus of the computer course at CEC, who has secured admission at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), a premier media institute under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, fulfilling his dream of becoming a media professional and contributing to the field of public communication. Bharat credits CEC for playing a vital role in shaping his journey by strengthening his communication skills, computer proficiency, and structured approach to learning.

Joga Ram from Sanchore, has opened his own business ‘Ramdev Mobile & Repairing Centre’ in Karda village, with the skills he learned at mobile repairing course of CEC, making him independent and proud. Struggling to get a job for some time, Joga Ram decided to give this course a try, and today, he believes it to be one of the best decisions of his life.
