The death of a student, Sahil Wakode, who reportedly died by suicide on September 18, has triggered political and social reactions across Maharashtra. Initial reports from IIT Bombay suggested that the student had engaged in cheating during an examination, which allegedly contributed to the tragic event. However, these claims have since been retracted, with the institute issuing a formal apology for its premature statements regarding Sahil’s death.

In a complaint filed by the student’s father, serious allegations of harassment were made against faculty members, including claims that casteist slurs were directed at the deceased over a period of three months. Response from IIT Bombay and Faculty

IIT Bombay reacted by suspending the deanship of Professor Suryanarayana Doolla, who was responsible for the mid-semester examination during which Sahil was allegedly caught using a smartphone. The decision to suspend Professor Doolla was made by the institute’s Director, Shireesh B. Kedare, as part of an immediate response to the unfolding situation.

The institute, in its recent communications, clarified that there had been no resignation from Director Kedare, as had been inaccurately reported in various media outlets. IIT Bombay further acknowledged that its initial characterisations were inappropriate and stated, “We apologise for the statements contained in our earlier communication concerning the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate demise of Sahil.”

The IIT Bombay Faculty Forum has publicly supported Professor Doolla, asserting that he acted in accordance with institutional protocols after allegedly witnessing Sahil using an unauthorised smartphone during the exam. They expressed distress over the damage to his reputation amid ongoing investigations.

Legal Proceedings and Investigation

Following the allegations made in the formal police complaint by the deceased’s father, the Mumbai Police have transferred the case to the Crime Branch for further inquiry. The complaint includes serious accusations against the involved campus authorities and faculty members, specifically naming Professor Doolla.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Professor Doolla by the Mumbai Police, which represents a significant step in the legal process surrounding this incident. The developments in this case are being closely monitored by various stakeholders, including the academic community and political figures.
