Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar Critiques Maharashtra’s State Budget 2026-27

The CSR Journal Magazine

Vijay Wadettiwar, a Congress Member of the Legislative Assembly from Maharashtra, voiced strong criticism regarding the state budget presented by the Mahayuti government. In statements made during a press conference in Nagpur, he characterized the farmer loan waiver initiative as a deceptive measure. The MLA accused the administration led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of prioritizing the interests of industrialists while neglecting the needs of the state’s agricultural community. Wadettiwar pointed out that the government is burdened with an interest payment obligation of Rs 67,000 crore. His remarks emphasized a belief that the current administration is exploiting Maharashtra’s resources.

Details of the State Budget Announcement

On March 6, Chief Minister and Finance Minister Devendra Fadnavis unveiled the Maharashtra state budget, which included a farm loan waiver scheme aimed at assisting farmers with overdue crop loans. Under this program, eligible farmers can receive relief of up to Rs 2 lakh. Additionally, Fadnavis proposed a reward of Rs 50,000 for those farmers who consistently repay their loans. This initiative was portrayed as a significant step toward alleviating the financial pressures faced by agricultural workers in the state.

Concerns About Democratic Processes

Wadettiwar reiterated a demand from the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition to appoint a Leader of Opposition within the Maharashtra Assembly. He alleged that the government lacks confidence in democratic practices, claiming that the current administration is resistant to including an opposition leader in legislative discussions. He expressed that if there were true commitment to democracy, an opposition leader would be designated to participate in the House. This concern reflects broader apprehensions about the government’s approach to opposition engagement.

Response to Parliamentary Issues

The Congress party is preparing to submit a resolution for a No-Confidence Motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. In backing this initiative, Wadettiwar asserted that the Opposition has faced limitations in voicing dissent during the Budget Session, citing incidents where the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, was not permitted to address matters concerning the government. He claimed that the Lok Sabha has operated in a manner that resembles a “one-man show,” leading to the Opposition’s decision to propose a no-confidence motion as a corrective measure. This motion has garnered support from 118 Opposition Members of Parliament who allege that the Speaker’s conduct has been influenced by partisan interests.

Upcoming Parliamentary Schedule

The second phase of the ongoing Parliament Budget Session is expected to continue until April 2. This session will focus on critical legislative affairs as well as discussions surrounding the Union Budget for 2026-27. The session commenced on January 28 with a joint address from the President to both Houses and is structured to include 30 sittings over the span of 65 days, concluding on April 2. The timeline indicates the government’s intent to prioritize essential budgetary and legislative matters during this period.
