The Congress leaders offered floral tributes, recognising Singh’s significant contributions to the nation.

Earlier in the day, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took to the social media platform X to share his thoughts on Singh’s legacy. Kharge referred to Singh as a visionary statesman who played a pivotal role in redefining India’s economic landscape through his reforms. He stated, “We remember with profound respect the extraordinary contribution of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to India’s nation-building.”

Kharge further emphasised Singh’s commitment to inclusive growth and the welfare of vulnerable communities, underscoring his governance principles. He noted, “His humility, integrity and wisdom defined his public life,” adding that Singh’s quiet leadership style focused on compassion and dignity.

In his tribute, Kharge stated, “On his birth anniversary, we pay our heartfelt homage to a statesman whose legacy of honest public service, inclusive development and transformative reforms will continue to inspire generations.”

Commemorations Across Political Leaders

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also recognised Singh’s contributions on social media, stating, “Tributes to our former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji on his birth anniversary. He spent many years in public life and served the nation with dedication.” This acknowledgment reflects Singh’s impact across party lines.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his sentiments by stating, “Remembering former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh ji on his jayanti today. His contributions to the nation will always be cherished.” This sentiment was echoed by Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who praised Singh as a scholar, economist, and statesman, highlighting his role in the Bengaluru Metro project.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy referred to Singh as an economist of global stature and a dedicated public servant whose vision significantly contributed to India’s development. These tributes illustrate the widespread respect and recognition for Singh’s public service among his contemporaries.

Legacy of Dr Manmohan Singh

Dr Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in a village in the Punjab province of undivided India. Following the general elections, he assumed the role of Prime Minister on May 22, 2004, and was sworn in for a second term on May 22, 2009. His leadership during these years was marked by substantial economic reforms that helped shape India’s trajectory.

Before his tenure as Prime Minister, Singh held several key positions within governmental organisations, including serving as Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. His extensive experience in public administration and finance laid the groundwork for his later achievements.

Dr Singh passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy characterised by notable economic reforms and a commitment to inclusive governance.
