Congress Demands SC-Supervised Probe Into Alleged Ayodhya Temple Theft

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Congress party has called for a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the alleged theft of donations from the Ram temple in Ayodhya. This demand was made public on Monday by Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, who questioned the inaction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath regarding the matter.

Ramesh insisted that an independent inquiry is essential to ensure accountability for those involved in the alleged misappropriation of funds. In a statement posted on social media platform X, Ramesh expressed his concerns, suggesting that the silence of the BJP leadership on this issue is alarming. He stated that the party, which has historically invoked the name of Lord Ram for political gain, is now facing repercussions due to the alleged theft.

Ramesh’s comments highlight a growing unease within the Congress regarding the handling of the investigation into the temple’s finances. Ramesh also alleged that the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) was designed to protect those accused of wrongdoing. He noted that the theft was reported on June 4, 2026, and the SIT was established shortly thereafter, raising questions about the integrity of the investigation process.

Details of the Allegations

According to Ramesh, the theft at the Ram temple was captured on video multiple times, with footage showing staff members allegedly concealing bundles of cash. He claimed that the individuals responsible for overseeing the temple’s treasury had issued a clean chit to key figures, including Champat Rai and Anil Mishra, despite the serious nature of the allegations.

Ramesh pointed out that the treasurer, Govind Giri, should have been aware of the financial transactions but reportedly denied any involvement of Rai in the scandal. The Congress leader further asserted that the full extent of the theft remains undisclosed, with the public not informed about the total value of the missing donations or any precious items. He cited a preliminary report from June 23, which indicated lapses in oversight protocols, questioning why there has been no thorough investigation into the matter.

Ramesh highlighted that while low-level staff members have been arrested, no senior officials from the Trust have faced charges. He raised concerns about the lack of rigorous interrogations by investigative agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), suggesting that the investigation has not been comprehensive.

Call for Accountability and Transparency

The Congress party has emphasised the need for a transparent and impartial investigation into the alleged theft. Ramesh remarked that the BJP government cannot be expected to investigate individuals associated with the Sangh Parivar who may be involved in the incident. He reiterated the demand for a Supreme Court-supervised inquiry to ensure that all parties are held accountable.

Ramesh’s statements reflect a broader concern within the Congress regarding the handling of the investigation and the apparent lack of action from the highest levels of government. He pointed out that over four months have passed since the theft was reported, yet both Chief Minister Adityanath and Prime Minister Modi have remained silent on the issue.

In conclusion, the Congress has called for full disclosure of the missing donations, accountability at all levels of the Trust, and a thorough investigation overseen by the Supreme Court. The party’s leaders have expressed their belief that the ongoing silence from the government raises serious questions about the integrity of the investigation and the potential protection of those involved in the alleged theft.
