West Bengal has started a new policy of giving certified copy of a deed online. From now on, nobody will get certified copy of a deed physically, all have to download it from online. To stop illegal broker nexus, the state land department has implemented this.
What changed?
From 1985 to 2025, the digitisation of 3 crores deed documents completed and after the verification, it was uploaded to the website by Directorate of Registration and Stamp Duty under the Finance Department of state government. Then two steps have been taken.
1) Downloading certified copy online is made compulsory. If no documents are available online, then only it will be allowed to go to the registry office.
2) The certified copy of the land and house deeds that has been registered from 2007 to now has been available online for so long.
Now it has increased to 1985. According to Finance department, digitisation process of the deed upto 1985 to 1965 also under process. Those deeds also will be uploaded in the website very soon. Now in such phase by phase way, digitisation all deed documents will be completed and will be available online very soon.
Certified copy of a land, house deed is now available in the registration office. To get the certified copy of a deed cost is 150 to 200 rupees. But, for the unholy nexus of brokers this cost sometimes goes to even 10 thousand rupees. A person who wants to get a certified copy of a particular deed, he has to go to registration office multiple times. According to finance department, now such unnecessary harassment will be over from April 1. People will get certified copy from online only giving fees and necessary documents.
Why online?
A senior official of finance department said, “Certified copy of a deed is very useful thing for person to show address proof. In case of partition deed, only one have the original deed, other would have certified copy. But, withdrawing such certified copy became a Herculean task as unholy broker nexus prevails in all registration offices across the state. They ask from five thousand to ten thousand rupees to provide certified copy.”
He further added, “To stop such nexus of brokers, we are introducing online process. Now, only through online one can get certified copy of the deed. They will have to show some documents and then depositing fees, one will get certified copy of a particular deed.”
The official said, “Those who are not very familiar with online process, they can go to our Bangladesh Sahayak Kendra (BSK) and the representative of such centres will help the customer to get this certified copy.”
