The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made it compulsory for all Class 10 students to appear for their first Board examination. In a notification released on February 16, the board indicated that students who fail to attend this initial exam for three or more subjects will be disqualified from taking the second examination. This announcement comes in response to numerous student inquiries regarding attendance and eligibility for subsequent exams.

Clarification on Attendance and Eligibility

In its clarification, CBSE emphasized the necessity for all students to attend the first Board examination. The board stated that all students who pass and meet eligibility criteria will have the opportunity to improve their scores in up to three subjects, which include Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and Languages. The regulation reflects the CBSE’s commitment to standardizing examination procedures and ensuring students fulfill their academic responsibilities.

Consequences for Missing Subjects

Students who do not appear for three or more subjects in the first examination will fall into the “Essential Repeat” category. This means they will only be able to take the main examinations during the following academic year in February. The policy aims to enforce attendance and commitment during the critical formative exam period for Class 10 students. It also establishes a clear pathway for students who need to improve their academic standing.

Compartment and Improvement Opportunities

CBSE has outlined provisions for students whose initial examination results yield a ‘Compartment’ classification. Such students will be permitted to participate in the second examination under the ‘Compartment’ category. However, once students complete Class 10, they will not be allowed to attempt stand-alone subjects. This regulation aims to streamline the academic process and maintain the integrity of the assessment structure.

Criteria for Second Examination Eligibility

The board has defined specific criteria for eligibility to take the second examination. This includes students seeking improvement in up to three main subjects, first or third chance for those falling into the compartment category, compartment alongside improvement options, and opportunities for students who have passed by substituting subjects. These conditions create a structured framework that manages student progression through the examination stages effectively.
