In what could be his final appearance as Chennai Super Kings’ captain, MS Dhoni led from the front both strategically and emotionally as his team registered a commanding 83-run victory over Gujarat Titans in their last league match of the IPL 2025 season. Despite ending the tournament at the bottom of the table, CSK concluded their campaign on a high, driven by stellar performances with both bat and ball.
The match took a dramatic turn during Gujarat’s innings when Dhoni, known for his calm presence, was seen visibly frustrated on the field. His agitation came after bowler Shivam Dube conceded 18 runs in the 10th over, with Sai Sudharsan and Shahrukh Khan forming a threatening partnership. Dhoni was particularly upset with Dube and Matheesha Pathirana for not executing the field placements he had directed.
The frustration, however, gave way to immediate success. Ravindra Jadeja was introduced into the attack right after, and on the very first ball of the over, Shahrukh Khan was caught by Pathirana at short third man. Just a few deliveries later, Sudharsan was dismissed by Jadeja, handing a catch to Dube at backward point. Commentators were quick to praise Dhoni’s field awareness and strategic changes.
CSK Shows Powerful Batting
Earlier in the match, Chennai showcased their batting firepower by posting a massive total of 230/5 in their 20 overs. Devon Conway (52) and Dewald Brevis (57) played commanding knocks, setting the foundation for what became one of CSK’s strongest performances this season. The aggressive approach and clean hitting allowed the team to post a target far beyond Gujarat’s reach.
In response, Gujarat Titans faltered early. Key batters including captain Shubman Gill, Jos Buttler, and Sherfane Rutherford were dismissed cheaply during the Powerplay, leaving GT at just 35/3. Although Sudharsan and Shahrukh Khan attempted to stabilize the innings with a 55-run partnership, CSK’s bowling unit dismantled the remaining lineup. Gujarat were bowled out for 147 in 18.3 overs.
It was a clinical bowling effort from CSK, with Anshul Kamboj leading the attack, picking up 3 wickets for 13 runs. He was well-supported by Noor Ahmed, who also took 3/21, and Ravindra Jadeja, who finished with 2/17. Khaleel Ahmed and Pathirana chipped in with a wicket each, completing an all-round performance.
CSK’s Overall Game in IPL Leaves Fans Upset
Despite the dominant win, CSK’s overall performance in IPL 2025 fell short of expectations. The team ended the season with only 8 points from 14 matches, finishing last on the points table for the first time in their history. Speaking after the match, Dhoni reflected on the team’s missteps, particularly during the early stages of the tournament.
“When we started the season, the first four out of six games were in Chennai. We chose to chase because of the dew, but I felt the wicket was actually better for batting first. That put pressure on our batters in the second innings, and the confidence slowly drained away,” he said.
Looking ahead, Dhoni hinted that Ruturaj Gaikwad will be taking over leadership responsibilities from next season. “One of the most important things was when Ruturaj comes back next season, he doesn’t need to worry about too many things. He needs to maybe fit in one role from the eleven,” Dhoni added.
Last IPL for Dhoni?
On whether this was his final IPL match, Dhoni responded with ambiguity: “It depends. I have 4–5 months to decide. There’s no hurry. Every year, it takes 15% more effort to keep the body fit. You have to be at your best this is top-level cricket.”
As for Gujarat Titans, they remain at the top of the points table with 18 points from 14 games, but their place in the top two is now under threat due to their deteriorated Net Run Rate. The outcome of the final league match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants will determine whether Gujarat retains their top-two status.
