Canada Rejected 80% of Indian Student Visas in 2025

The CSR Journal Magazine

Canada has rejected nearly 80 per cent of student visa applications from India in 2025, according to new data, sparking concern among aspiring international students. The development comes amid growing tensions in bilateral ties and policy changes in Ottawa, which have made entry for Indian students increasingly difficult.

The rejection rate is one of the highest in recent years and comes as a shock to many Indian families who consider Canada a top education hub. Traditionally, Canada has hosted over 300,000 Indian students annually, with India being the largest source of international students in the country. However, stricter scrutiny of applications, allegations of fake documentation, and diplomatic strains have added to the hurdles for genuine applicants.

Rising Visa Curbs in Canada

Officials in Canada have reportedly introduced tougher rules to regulate the massive inflow of international students. Authorities argue that the system had come under stress due to increasing numbers, limited housing facilities, and concerns over misuse of student visas for work or migration purposes. The policy shift is being seen as a direct outcome of domestic pressure within Canada to balance educational opportunities with economic capacity.

Ottawa has even closed down the Student Direct Stream (SDS), which previously allowed eligible Indian students to secure visa approvals in as little as 20 calendar days, provided they met strict financial and academic requirements. The shutdown of SDS has affected thousands of students who used to benefit from its efficiency, with recent figures indicating over 35,000 Indian applications were processed under SDS last year alone. Now, applicants face standard processing times often exceeding 60 days and more rigorous document checks, causing deep concern among families who view this as a clear sign that Canada is significantly curbing Indian student inflow.

For Indian students, the high rejection rate has meant a sudden disruption of plans. Many had secured admissions to Canadian universities but were unable to travel after visa denials. Education consultants in India highlight that families have lost significant money in application fees and deposits, apart from dealing with disappointment for aspirants who had been preparing for years. The decision has led to calls for greater transparency in the visa process.

Germany Emerges as New Hotspot

As Canada tightens access, Germany has seen a steady rise in Indian applications for higher education. In 2025, Indian enrolments in German universities have grown faster than in most other European countries. Germany’s appeal lies in its tuition-free or low-cost education, especially in public universities, along with strong job prospects in engineering, information technology, and research.

Unlike Canada, Germany has not introduced sweeping restrictions on student inflow. Instead, it has expanded initiatives to attract skilled talent from Asia, recognising the need for a young workforce in its ageing economy. More Indian students are now considering courses taught in English in German institutions, which makes the transition smoother while also providing exposure to global industries.

Experts also point out that the cultural experience of studying in Europe is drawing students who earlier had limited options beyond the United Kingdom, the United States, or Canada. With easier access to a Schengen visa, aspirants find the opportunity to explore multiple European countries while focusing on academics.

Impact on Indian Students’ Decisions

The shift away from Canada marks a major turning point in overseas education trends for Indian students. For years, Canada was considered one of the most friendly and accessible destinations, offering post-study work visas and a pathway to permanent residency. With the rejection rate now at 80 per cent, students are forced to diversify their choices and look to non-traditional destinations.

Germany’s rise also signals a broader trend of Indian students favouring destinations that balance quality education with lower costs. Countries like Ireland, the Netherlands, and Australia are also receiving increased interest, but Germany’s rapid growth reflects both its strong academic reputation and policy support for foreign students.

Education counsellors in India believe that the sudden curbs in Canada could permanently alter student flows. Families are now more cautious when investing in applications, with many preferring countries where visa chances are stable. The trend may also benefit India as some students choose to stay back for domestic opportunities rather than risk repeated visa rejections abroad.
