Calls Grow for Hardik Pandya to Step Down as Mumbai Indians Captain

The CSR Journal Magazine

In light of the upcoming IPL 2026 season, Kris Srikkanth, a former captain of the Indian cricket team and ex-chairman of the selectors, has called on Hardik Pandya to relinquish his role as captain of the Mumbai Indians. Srikkanth proposed that Suryakumar Yadav, who recently captained India to a T20 World Cup victory, should take over leadership duties for the franchise. He expressed that a potential power struggle within the team could be resolved if Suryakumar assumes the captaincy.

Pandya’s Tenure and Fan Reactions

Hardik Pandya has been at the helm of the Mumbai Indians since transitioning from the Gujarat Titans in 2024, succeeding Rohit Sharma, a decision that has sparked mixed reactions among the fanbase. Inevitably, during his first season in command, some segments of the crowd at Wankhede Stadium expressed dissatisfaction, believing that Rohit deserved to retain his captaincy role. The team did not undergo extensive changes during the IPL 2025 mega auction but managed to keep its core players intact. However, results remained challenging, with the Mumbai Indians finishing 10th in 2024 and narrowly making it to the playoffs the following year, only to be eliminated in the first knockout match.

Srikkanth Advocates for Suryakumar Yadav

Despite Hardik’s abilities as a captain, Srikkanth advocates for Suryakumar Yadav to lead the team in IPL 2026, which commences on March 28. He acknowledged Hardik’s qualities as both an athlete and a captain, referencing his previous victory with the Gujarat Titans. However, he firmly believes that the leadership scenario must be addressed internally within the franchise. Srikkanth stated that it would be beneficial for team ownership and management to convene discussions involving Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya to clarify leadership roles and possibly appoint Suryakumar as the captain.

Hardik Pandya’s Legacy with the Team

Reflecting on Hardik’s experience, Srikkanth noted the irony that Hardik had previously played under Rohit Sharma and won the T20 World Cup, and then under Suryakumar Yadav with similar success. He suggested that the optimal resolution to any leadership tensions would be for Hardik to proactively step aside for Suryakumar, acknowledging the latter’s recent successes. Srikkanth emphasized that should there be any concerns regarding leadership dynamics, Hardik’s endorsement of Suryakumar’s leadership could effectively resolve them.

Looking Ahead to IPL 2026

As the Mumbai Indians gear up for the IPL 2026 season, they aim for a robust start, having struggled in prior seasons due to poor early performances. While Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav are anticipated to play critical roles within the leadership group, Rohit’s individual performance will be closely observed. After dedicating time to improve his fitness and excelling in ODIs, Rohit seeks to regain his form with the bat for the Mumbai franchise. As he prepares for IPL and future international commitments, his contributions will be vital to the team’s objectives, including participation in the 2027 World Cup.
