Brazilian Hiker Juliana Marins Trapped in Indonesia’s Mount Rinjani Volcano: Rescue Underway

A 26-year-old Brazilian hiker Juliana Marins has been trapped in the steep crater walls of Mount Rinjani, which is an active volcano in Lombok Island, Indonesia. A rescue team has been trying to rescue her for the past three days, however the efforts haven’t been successful yet.

Juliana was trekking with her group early on June 21, when she slipped and fell off the cliff of Camara Nunggal, this is a point along the route of Rinjani summit.

Shortly after her fall, in a statement released by Gunung Rinjani National Park states that this dreadful incident happened around 6:30 AM, a loud cry was heard when she descended down the crater wall, and the rescuers have since then tried their best to save her.

The efforts of rescuing her have been difficult because of dense clouds, difficult terrain and overhanging cliffs.

It has been confirmed by drone surveillance that Juliana is stuck 500 meters deep and seemed motionless in the surveillance footage.

Status of rescue operation

It has been confirmed that she — the later drone footage confirmed that she is conscious and moving and the rescue team has managed to supply food and water to her. In an effort to rescue her, two rescuers had descended down the site, however they had to return as the structure doesn’t support anchoring. There is only one possibility and that is to trek down, but that would be a big risk.

All possibilities are being explored, helicopters are also on standby, waiting for weather conditions to improve, there is very low visibility currently.

Family concerned & seeking help

Meanwhile Juliana’s family and friends have written on social media, asking for help, and have shown their frustration over the slow rescue process.

One of the family members wrote, “A WHOLE DAY and they had advanced only 250m below, they were 350m away from Juliana, and they retreated. WE NEED HELP, WE NEED THE RESCUE TO REACH JULIANA URGENTLY!”

Responding to their concern, park has reverted, “The team remains on standby and committed to continuing the best efforts for safety.”
