For the second time in 10 days, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Kumar Verma has been summoned by Dhaka. Verma was summoned at 10 AM on Tuesday. However, the reason behind the summons is not yet clear. Sources say that Pranay Verma was summoned in light of the security situation that has arisen regarding the Bangladeshi missions in various locations in India, including New Delhi and Kolkata.
It seems the Bangladeshi interim government is treading the path of diplomatic conflict with India to appease fundamentalists. And hence, the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry has summoned India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma once again.
This is the second time the Indian ambassador has been summoned in the last 10 days. Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam conveyed Dhaka’s “grave concern” over recent security incidents involving Bangladeshi diplomatic missions in India, including a protest outside the High Commission in New Delhi on December 20 and vandalism at a visa centre in West Bengal’s Siliguri on December 22.
Bangladesh sought India’s help to nab Sharif Osman Hadi’s killers
Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma on Tuesday. In recent days, diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh have escalated. The Indian government decided to close several visa centres in Bangladesh due to security concerns. Following this, Dhaka closed three Bangladeshi visa centres in India overnight last Monday. The Indian ambassador was summoned shortly thereafter. According to sources, Pranay Verma has been requested to ensure enhanced security for Bangladesh missions located in various parts of India.

Who was Sharif Osman Hadi?
Sharif Osman Hadi was a prominent Bangladeshi political activist and a central figure in the 2024 July Uprising that led to the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He was the founder and spokesperson of ‘Inqilab Mancha’, a radical student-led socio-cultural and political platform.
On December 12, 2025, Hadi was shot in the head by masked assailants while launching his election campaign in the Bijoynagar area of central Dhaka. After initially receiving treatment in Dhaka, he was airlifted to Singapore General Hospital for advanced care. He succumbed to his injuries on December 18, 2025, at the age of 32.
Sharif Osman Hadi died around 9:45 PM on Thursday while undergoing treatment in Singapore. Following his death, unrest spread to various parts of Bangladesh. Pranay Kumar Verma summoned for second time in 10 days by Bangladesh
This is the second time Pranay Verma has been summoned to the ministry within the last 10 days. Furthermore, this marks at least the sixth time the Indian ambassador has been summoned during the tenure of Muhammad Yunus-led interim government due to various incidents.
Previously, Verma was summoned on December 14. Later, it was stated that Bangladesh has sought India’s cooperation in preventing the attackers of Sharif Osman Hadi, the head of the Inqilab Manch, from fleeing to India. A request was made to ensure the arrest and extradition of the criminals to Bangladesh if they entered India. Pranay Verma was also informed of the interim government’s concerns regarding the continuous “provocative” statements of the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently residing in New Delhi.
India summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner M. Riaz Hamidullah
Following this incident, on December 17, India’s Ministry of External Affairs summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to New Delhi, M. Riaz Hamidullah, in a reciprocal move. The consecutive summoning of the High Commissioners of both countries in Dhaka and New Delhi has created new tensions in bilateral relations. However, diplomatic circles believe that the rise of fundamentalism is behind Bangladesh’s actions. The current Yunus government is completely controlled by these anti-India forces.
