Bangladesh Commemorates Genocide Day, Criticizes Pakistan for 1971 Atrocities

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 25, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman expressed strong condemnation of the actions undertaken by the Pakistani military during Operation Searchlight in 1971. In a correspondence publicized online to observe Genocide Day, Rahman characterized the military’s actions as some of the most egregious acts of genocide recorded in history against the unarmed populace of Bangladesh. He labeled March 25 as one of the most “disgraceful and brutal days,” emphasizing that it was a “pre-planned massacre.” Rahman specifically noted that the Pakistani army conducted indiscriminate gunfire targeting educators and students at Dacca University, alongside innocent civilians at Pilkhana and Rajarbāgh Police Lines.

Beginning of Armed Resistance by the Bangladeshi Forces

Rahman recounted that the 8th East Bengal Regiment stationed in Chattogram was the first to formally resist the atrocities, declaring ‘We revolt,’ which marked the commencement of a nine-month-long Liberation War. This resistance was a pivotal moment in the fight against oppression in Bangladesh.

Context of the Violence Following the 1971 General Elections

The military actions unfolded in the wake of the general elections held in 1971, where Sheikh Mujibur Rahman emerged victorious. Following the announcement of the election results, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was arrested by the Pakistani army, subsequent to which widespread violence was inflicted upon the Bengali-speaking population. This marked a dark chapter in Bangladesh’s struggle for autonomy and human rights.

Upcoming Commemoration of Bangladesh’s Independence Day

Bangladesh is set to celebrate its 56th Independence Day shortly after marking Genocide Day. Earlier this year, the country completed general elections, which witnessed extensive violence and public demonstrations, resulting in the displacement of Sheikh Hasina’s government. Tarique Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) achieved a significant electoral triumph in the February elections.
