Attempted Murder Accused Escapes Custody from Mumbai Court

The CSR Journal Magazine

An undertrial accused of attempted murder and firing escaped from a sessions court in Mumbai on February 1, 2025. The individual, identified as 42-year-old Harrison Joseph, reportedly fled during a court appearance following a violent incident involving a police constable. This escape has triggered an extensive manhunt by law enforcement agencies.

Joseph was facing charges related to a shooting that allegedly took place in March 2024. He had been apprehended earlier in January 2025 and was brought to the court for a hearing. On the day of his escape, he was being taken to a temporary lock-up when he reportedly shoved a constable named Prashant Kamble, creating an opportunity for his escape.

Sources indicate that due to delays in the proceedings, Joseph was not immediately returned to jail along with other defendants. Instead, he was in transit to the court lock-up, which enabled him to evade capture. Witnesses suggest he may have quickly boarded a train after his escape, but his current location is unknown.

Ongoing Search Efforts

Authorities have launched a concerted effort to locate and recapture Joseph. Multiple police teams are examining CCTV footage from the court and surrounding areas to gather any clues regarding his movements post-escape. The investigation aims to determine the route he took and to identify any individuals who may have assisted him.

The Mumbai police have intensified patrols and are conducting searches in various locations, particularly transport hubs where Joseph may have been spotted since his flight from custody. They are also appealing to the public for any information that could aid in his arrest.

The new developments have prompted police to formally record a fresh case against Joseph under Section 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to resisting arrest or escaping from lawful custody. Officials have urged vigilance among the community and the cooperation of citizens to ensure a swift resolution to this alarming situation.

Criminal Background of Harrison Joseph

Harrison Joseph’s legal troubles stem from a violent incident that occurred near Crawford Market in March 2024, when he allegedly fired at a man named Raju Shaikh over a financial dispute. The altercation reportedly escalated after Shaikh declined to lend him money. This incident not only resulted in serious charges against Joseph but also raised concerns about public safety.

Prior to his arrest, Joseph had been implicated in other criminal activities, which has contributed to the police’s determined efforts to ensure he is apprehended swiftly following his escape. The serious nature of the charges he faces underscores the urgency of his recapture to prevent any further potential harm to the public.

In the wake of his escape, legal experts have called attention to procedural safeguards within the court system. They emphasise the importance of thorough security measures during court appearances to prevent incidents of this kind in the future. The ramifications of such breaches highlight potential gaps in protocol that may require immediate corrective actions.
