Athlete Undergoes Surgery After Apple Watch Detects Serious Heart Condition

The CSR Journal Magazine

An athlete had his severe heart condition revealed thanks to the Apple Watch, which alerted him to an issue he was unaware of prior. In a recent video on Apple’s YouTube channel, a runner named Connor shared his experience of how the smartwatch highlighted a health concern during a triathlon training session.

Connor reported that, despite his efforts, he was noticing a decline in his fitness levels while training. His heart rate peaked at an alarming 219 beats per minute during one of his sessions, prompting him to check the ECG feature on his Apple Watch.

“Seeing my heart rate at around 219 beats per minute was astonishing,” he stated. “However, I remembered that I had an ECG function available on my watch.”

Medical Journey Following ECG Alert

“The condition was severe enough that I needed to undergo open-heart surgery,” Connor explained. He acknowledged that this unexpected discovery was life-changing and drastically altered his perspective about the importance of his smartwatch in monitoring his health.

Apple’s Commitment to Health Monitoring

Connor’s case illustrates how the small features within a smartwatch can lead users to seek timely medical attention, potentially saving lives. The ongoing emphasis on health technologies is part of Apple’s broader vision, as articulated by CEO Tim Cook, who noted the importance of health initiatives during a 2019 interview.
