As per official data, landslides and floods have claimed three more lives as of Sunday, bringing the total death toll to 26. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 20 people have died due to floods, while six fatalities were caused by landslides. Among the recent victims were children who drowned in the floodwaters in Kamalpur, Kamrup district.
Thousands Displaced Across 30 Districts as Rivers Continue to Overflow
However, the flood situation is showing signs of improvement, with waters gradually receding in several areas. Despite this, more than 2.6 lakh people across 11 districts — including Hailakandi, Sribhumi, Morigaon, Kamrup, Goalpara, Cachar, Nagaon, Kamrup (Metro), Darrang, Lakhimpur, and Golaghat — remain affected.
NDRF, SDRF Teams Deployed; Relief Camps Set Up for Affected Families
During the first wave of floods, 1,62,108 people were impacted, with the worst-hit districts being Hailakandi (51,663 affected) and Cachar (36,271 affected). Currently, around 31,000 displaced residents are taking shelter in 130 relief camps set up across the state.
In Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, seven animals have died due to the floods, while 31 have been rescued, according to ASDMA.
Schools Shut, Roads Washed Away; CM Visits Worst-Hit Areas, Promises Aid
To review the situation on the ground, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the affected areas and relief camps. He interacted with the displaced residents, offering them words of encouragement and assuring them of full government support to restore normalcy as the floodwaters recede. Sarma emphasized the importance of community strength in overcoming the crisis together.
