Now AI device will detect Parkinson’s Disease with tests done at home!

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming healthcare, offering solutions across diagnostics, treatment, and administrative tasks. In the present day, AI can enhance diagnostic accuracy, personalise treatment plans, automate routine tasks, and improve patient outcomes. It plays a role in predicting disease outbreaks and optimising resource allocation within healthcare systems.

Researchers at the University of Rochester in New York have recently invented a device which will detect Parkinson’s disease. The device has been named ‘Park’.

What is Parkinson’s?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Parkinson’s disease is a brain condition that causes problems with movement, mental health, sleep, pain and other health issues. It gets worse over time. There is no cure, but therapies and medicines can reduce symptoms. Common symptoms include tremors, painful muscle contractions and difficulty speaking. Parkinson disease results in high rates of disability and the need for care. Many people with the disease also develop dementia.”

There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but therapies including medicines, surgery and rehabilitation can reduce symptoms, says WHO.

Who are usually affected by Parkinson’s?

Parkinson’s disease usually occurs in older people, but younger people can also be affected. Men are affected more often than women. The cause of Parkinson’s disease is unknown but people with a family history of the disease have a higher risk. Exposure to air pollution, pesticides and solvents may increase risk.

What is Park?

This device works in conjunction with a smart home device. Many people now use this type of device at home. The manufacturers claim that through the device, AI gives some instructions to the person, which can be analysed to understand whether the person is suffering from Parkinson’s or not.

How does the device work?

‘Park’ has been trained on the basis of data from about 1,300 participants. The makers claim that the device allows a person to perform multiple neurological tests at home. These include speech, facial expressions, and finger movements. After that, the device analyses the data received from the person and tells whether he is suffering from Parkinson’s or not.

‘Park’ also gives a clear idea about possible treatment methods depending on the test results. This service can also be used through an internet browser. However, researchers have said that the device is able to provide the best results through smart home devices.

Success rate

There are still various opinions on the use of AI in the field of medical services. However, the makers claim that ‘Park’ has a success rate of 86 percent so far in diagnosing Parkinson’s. The makers believe that those who are out of reach of neurological medical services will benefit from this device. After that, if you consult a doctor as needed, it may be possible to control Parkinson’s in time.

When will it come to the market

The manufacturers have not yet announced any information about when the general public will be able to use ‘Park’. However, in a statement, they have said that they have not yet tied up with multinational companies that manufacture smart home devices like Amazon or Google. In this case, they want to prioritise the issue of user data protection.
