Agniveer Retirement 2026: First Batch of 18k+ Set to Exit Service by December 31

The CSR Journal Magazine

The first group of Agniveers is scheduled to retire by December 31, 2026. This group consists of 18,300 Agniveers who will complete their four-year tenure under the Agnipath recruitment scheme. The phased release of these personnel will commence in mid-November, as confirmed by unnamed officials. The process will involve the Navy, followed by the Air Force and the Army, gradually transitioning the Agniveers out of service.

As the retirement date approaches, the Agniveers are preparing for their next steps. The government has developed a framework to support their transition into civilian life, focusing on employment opportunities within various sectors.

Employment Opportunities for Retiring Agniveers

The Indian government is planning several job openings for Agniveers exiting the armed forces. They will benefit from a 50 per cent reservation in recruitment for constable (General Duty) and rifleman positions in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles. Additionally, these individuals will be exempt from the written examination, physical standard test (PST), and physical efficiency test (PET).

Beyond CAPFs, retired Agniveers will also have access to job quotas in state police forces, Indian Railways, the Coast Guard, and 16 defence public sector undertakings. This initiative aims to facilitate a smoother transition for Agniveers into civilian roles, recognising their service and skills acquired during their tenure.

Furthermore, several states are implementing policies to reserve a percentage of entry-level positions specifically for ex-Agniveers. Reports indicate that between 10 per cent and 20 per cent of these posts will be allocated to former Agniveers, enhancing their employment prospects.

State-Level Initiatives for Ex-Agniveers

In a notable development, Punjab Governor and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, Gulab Chand Kataria, has approved a 20 per cent horizontal reservation for ex-Agniveers in direct recruitment for the post of Jail Warder (Group C) within the Prisons Department of Chandigarh. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to support the reintegration of former Agniveers into society.

Additionally, a similar 20 per cent horizontal reservation has been established for eligible posts in the Chandigarh Fire Services and the Forest Department. The Chandigarh Police will also grant a 20 per cent horizontal reservation for direct recruitment to the positions of Constable (Executive and Wireless) for ex-Agniveers.

These measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure that the skills and experiences of Agniveers are recognised and utilised effectively in various public service roles. The government aims to create a supportive environment for these individuals as they transition from military to civilian life.

Background of the Agnipath Scheme

The Agnipath scheme was launched by the Central government in June 2022 as a military recruitment initiative. This programme aims to enlist young individuals into the Army, Navy, and Air Force for a four-year term, during which they are referred to as Agniveers. The age criteria for applicants initially ranged from 17.5 to 21 years, although the upper limit was temporarily raised to 23 years for the first recruitment cycle due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This scheme has been designed to modernise military recruitment and provide a pathway for young people to serve the nation while also preparing them for future opportunities in civilian life. The upcoming retirements mark a significant milestone in the implementation of this programme, highlighting both the achievements of the Agniveers and the government’s commitment to their future.

As the first batch prepares for retirement, the focus remains on ensuring that they have viable options for employment and support as they transition to civilian roles, reflecting the government’s recognition of their service and dedication.
