Aamir Khan Backs Leonardo DiCaprio on Safeguarding Theatrical Release Window Amid Streaming Surge

The CSR Journal Magazine

In light of Leonardo DiCaprio’s remarks regarding the diminishing theatrical release window due to the proliferation of streaming services, Aamir Khan has expressed his agreement with these concerns. In an interview with Variety India, he described the ongoing situation between cinema houses and OTT platforms as lacking a “graceful compromise.” Khan emphasized that the current circumstances create a challenging environment for theatrical releases. He stated, “Right now, it’s not a graceful compromise. That’s not a good situation to be in.” He elaborated that perspectives from various angles suggest that a balanced resolution is not yet in sight.

Industry-Wide Challenges

Khan pointed out that the issue is not confined to Bollywood but is instead a widespread concern affecting a multitude of film industries. He highlighted that numerous producers are encountering similar struggles, both in Bollywood and within regional cinemas, particularly in the South. “I agree with what Leonardo DiCaprio said, that the theatrical window needs to be protected to some extent. If you want the theatrical business to thrive and be healthy, you need to protect it,” he asserted. This view underscores his belief in the necessity of safeguarding theatrical releases as a means to maintain industry health.

Adaptable Release Strategies

Further discussing the complexities of film releases, Khan suggested that a one-size-fits-all approach may not be suitable for every type of film. He noted that different genres may require tailored strategies for their theatrical windows. “I think you need to work on different models. Mainstream films, which have a lot at stake, need a slightly longer window.” He cited the film “Dhurandhar” as an example of how a prolonged theatrical release can yield benefits. According to Khan, major films could potentially require extended windows, while smaller and experimental films might succeed with shorter ones. He advocated for a flexible release model that considers varying film types and their respective needs.

Current Trends in Cinema

Khan’s statements come amid escalating discussions around the balance between theatrical releases and direct-to-streaming options, particularly in the wake of the pandemic, which has shifted global viewing preferences. This evolving landscape has prompted filmmakers and industry professionals to reconsider traditional release formats. As cinema continues to adapt, figures like Khan and DiCaprio play a role in advocating for a model that ensures theatrical experiences remain viable.

Aamir Khan’s Recent Projects

On the professional front, Aamir Khan recently made a cameo and served as a producer for “Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos,” which stars Vir Das. Additionally, he is backing the upcoming film “Ek Din,” featuring his son Junaid Khan alongside prominent actress Sai Pallavi. These projects reflect Khan’s continued engagement in various capacities within the film industry as he navigates the current landscape of cinema releases.
