CSR News: Japanese Multinational Company Supports “No Ocean Waste” Initiative in Mumbai
Mumbai, India: Japanese Multinational Company Brother International (India) Private Limited, a global leader in technology and innovation, reinforced its commitment to sustainability by supporting “No Ocean Waste” initiative. The event took place on Monday, January 27, 2025, at Juhu Koliwada Beach, Mumbai, in partnership with Project Mumbai. This initiative was a part of Brother Group’s Environmental Vision 2050, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14: Life Below Water.
The event highlighted Brother International India’s ongoing CSR efforts to reduce marine pollution and contribute to a cleaner, waste-free ocean. Employees were engaged in a beach clean-up drive, where the collected waste was sent for recycling in collaboration with the local municipal office. This initiative underscored Brother India’s proactive steps towards environmental preservation, as outlined in the Brother Group Global Charter.
Brother International India has actively demonstrated its commitment to social and environmental causes through their past CSR initiatives. The company has supported “Quality Education” again aligning with SDG 4 of the UNSDGs for underprivileged, HIV infected and tribal children. Partnering with the Mahesh Foundation in Karnataka, a National Award-winning NGO for child welfare and Govardhan Rural Development to enhance education in rural schools, focusing in the areas of Maths and science to give the tribal children an equal opportunity to compete in the competitive world. On behalf of the company, the employees who volunteered to visit these schools not only distributed stationeries but also interacted with students to inspire academic growth.
In another impactful effort, Brother International India organized the “Relay for Life” under Brother Groups Golden Ring Project in association with the Indian Cancer Society. Through this initiative, the company extended financial support of INR 4.5 million for the treatment of 99 underprivileged cancer patients across 6 empaneled hospitals in India.
Speaking about the initiative, Mr. Alok Nigam, Managing Director of Brother International India, stated, “The ‘No Ocean Waste’ initiative reflects Brother India’s dedication to turning environmental goals into actionable efforts. By addressing marine pollution, we aim to inspire change and protect the planet’s vital ecosystems. Partnering with Project Mumbai strengthens our impact, ensuring a cleaner, healthier future for our oceans.”
The initiative invited 27 employees from Brother International India to volunteer their time alongside Project Mumbai to preserve marine life through tangible action. The activity emphasized raising awareness about the importance of oceans as natural resources and the need for collective efforts to tackle marine pollution.
Brother International India’s “No Ocean Waste” initiative aligned with its broader sustainability goals, including reducing its environmental footprint and achieving carbon neutrality. The initiative also integrated the principles of the Brother Group Global Charter, which emphasizes giving back to the community while preserving natural resources.
The “No Ocean Waste” initiative featured active participation from Brother International India’s senior leadership team, reflecting their commitment to sustainability and leading by example. Attending the event were Alok Nigam (Managing Director) & Nishi Saremu (Director), Their presence reinforced Brother International India’s dedication to meaningful environmental change.
Project Mumbai, a well-recognized NGO championing urban sustainability, brought its expertise to the initiative by mobilizing volunteers and executing impactful campaigns. This partnership ensured the “No Ocean Waste” initiative’s success in creating a ripple effect of awareness and action.
