NIIT Foundation, in collaboration with Ciena India, has launched its second Digital Transformation Vehicle (DTV) in Sonipat, Haryana, continuing their mission to bridge the digital divide in rural India. This initiative follows the successful deployment of the first DTV in the villages of Faridabad, Haryana, which has had a positive impact on local communities since its inception in February 2023.
The new DTV in Sonipat was launched in June 2024 and has already reached over 3,000 individuals in its first year. The program is set to expand significantly, with plans to impact approximately 16,000 individuals by March 2027, covering a wide demographic range from ages 6 to 60.
The DTV program aims to empower rural communities by enhancing digital literacy and equipping individuals with the essential technological skills needed for effective communication and daily activities. In addition to fostering digital skills, the program integrates educational frameworks, linking participants to government programs and initiatives that further enhance learning and skill development.
Sapna Moudgil at NIIT Foundation said, “In a time when technology shapes our lives, this initiative returns the hope for rural areas, from mere machines into the gateways of knowledge to groom the undeveloped minds with skills so that the gap between dream and opportunity is smaller.”
“Development of digital skills in India is essential for economic growth and poverty alleviation. With a majority of the population in India still residing in rural areas; improving the digital skill levels of this segment will benefit not only the individual but also the community’s economic well-being,” noted Amit Malik, Vice President & Sales Leader, Ciena India.
The DTV program creates an interactive learning environment, where individuals develop collaborative problem-solving skills using digital technology to address everyday challenges. The ultimate goal is to provide rural youth with equal opportunities to thrive in a digitalized world, ensuring they are equipped with the skills necessary for success in today’s economy.
Since the launch of DTV Faridabad in 2023, the program has already reached 8,667 beneficiaries and Twelve “Hole in the Wall” Learning Stations have engaged 2,190 individuals as of March 2024. Ciena and NIIT Foundation have consistently demonstrated that their combined efforts can successfully tackle the digital divide and promote sustainable skill development in underserved communities.
