The Centre on Wednesday imposes the GRAP 4 restrictions within Delhi-NCR. The Commission for Air-Quality Management (CAQM) subcommittee decided to invoke actions under Stage 3 (severe air quality of Delhi) and Stage 4 (Severe+ air quality of Delhi). This happens as the Delhi air worsens. Earlier on January 12, the CAQM revoked all stage 3 restrictions after AQI in Delhi improved because of rainfall.
GRAP4 stands for Graded Response Action Plan. It is a framework designed to tackle Delhi’s winter pollution. It categorises the air quality of Delhi into four categories: Stage 1 is poor (AQI 201 to 300,) Stage 2 is very poor (AQI 31 to 400), Stage 3 is severe (AQI 4012 to 450) and Stage 4 is severe+ (AQI above 450). Currently, Delhi has imposed GRAP Stage 4 restriction because of a sudden increase in air pollution in the second week of January.
This will ban all physical classes for students, except classes 10th and 12th. The entry of trucks, other than those getting essential items, will not be allowed. However, all LNG/CNG/electric/ BS4 and Diesel trucks will be permitted. The Central and Delhi governments will also try permitting government employees to work from home.
Unfavourable meteorological conditions along with vehicular emission and paddy-straw burning led to an increase in levels of pollutants in Delhi NCR. This has become more severe during winter. Air pollution combined with fog can often make visibility difficult during the night and early morning hours.
