Typically bustling bazaars and vibrant fruit and vegetable markets in Rawalpindi were notably vacant during this period. Key commercial hubs, such as Murree Road and Peshawar Road, along with areas adjacent to Islamabad, were entirely shut down. While a few shops on inner streets opened sporadically, essential retailers, including dairy and grocery outlets, faced enforced shutdowns.

A local shopkeeper from Chaklala Scheme-III mentioned that police ordered them to close despite initially operating in the morning. The Rawalpindi Traders Association corroborated that market closures were mandated by authorities, acting in conjunction with district administration and police directives.

Residents Face Challenges in Procuring Essentials

The sudden closure of markets placed a strain on residents, many of whom struggled to find basic food items. Reports indicated that individuals resorted to searching through inner streets to locate bread and vegetables. Consequently, some households turned to cooking lentils and other alternatives due to the lack of fresh produce and consistently low gas pressure in various parts of the city.

The impact of the shutdown extended beyond shopping, affecting transportation services as well. With public transit significantly reduced, residents increasingly relied on private transportation options. This change resulted in a marked increase in fares, which only added to the distress faced by the local population. The situation has reportedly led to frustrations among families disproportionately affected by the limitations.

Authorities maintained that the stringent measures were essential for security. The deployment of over 5,000 police personnel throughout the city and the establishment of more than 350 checkpoints aimed to closely monitor movement during this critical period. Officials asserted that such measures were put in place to ensure the safety of foreign delegations visiting Islamabad.
