Merchant Navy Sailor Returns From West Asia Conflict And Shares His Experience

The CSR Journal Magazine

Shivendra Kumar Chaurasia, a merchant navy sailor from Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, recently recounted his harrowing experiences amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia. After being caught in dangerous circumstances at sea, he returned home and spoke to the media about his ordeal. His account provides insight into the dire conditions faced by sailors in the region.

Details of the Conflict and Trapped Conditions

Chaurasia, who began sailing in 2014, joined a vessel in December last year shortly before the situation in the region deteriorated. The conflict escalated significantly on February 28, when explosions were first reported close to their vessel. On March 3, a major blast occurred, leaving the crew feeling panicked and unsafe.

To address the rising threat, the captain took precautionary measures to keep the crew informed and safe. Chaurasia noted that immediate communication with their shipping company was crucial for their safety. They produced a video for the Directorate General of Shipping, outlining their situation and seeking assistance. This period marked the first occasion he had experienced such an alarming crisis at sea.

The frequency of the explosions caused immense anxiety among the crew, disrupting their sleep and daily routines. Chaurasia described how they monitored news updates, hoping for a ceasefire to provide some relief. The crew recognised the seriousness of their circumstances while trying to stay connected with the outside world.

Daily Life Aboard During Turbulence

As the situation escalated, Chaurasia remarked on the relentless nature of the explosions, which made it difficult to maintain a sense of normalcy aboard. The crew had been relying on internet access provided by their shipping company to stay abreast of developments. Chaurasia articulated a desire for the war to conclude quickly, enabling those trapped on various vessels to return home safely.

He explained the central role that merchant navy vessels play in global trade, noting that his ship was responsible for transporting bulk materials such as limestone, zinc, and iron ore between countries. Chaurasia indicated that the uncertain environment greatly impacted their operations and heightened the risks associated with their cargo deliveries.

In reflecting on the conditions at sea, he expressed empathy for other sailors still stranded in areas where they lacked basic necessities like food and internet connectivity. His call for a quick resolution to the conflict was not only for his sake but also for the wellbeing of his fellow sailors.

Witnessing Devastation and Continuous Threats

Chaurasia candidly shared his harrowing experiences witnessing multiple ships sinking during skirmishes in the area. He described an attack by the Iranian Navy on a warship that resulted in its sinking, further underscoring the gravity of the situation faced by those navigating these waters. The constant threat of explosions was a persistent stressor that left him mentally drained.

The turmoil they endured at sea has left lasting impacts on Chaurasia, who is still affected by the sound of explosions even after returning home. His account serves as a stark reminder of the risks sailors face as they navigate conflicts in critical maritime zones. There remains widespread concern about the ongoing safety of sailors who continue to be caught in similar conflicts.

As he enjoys time with his family, Chaurasia offers hope for better conditions for those still in peril, calling for efforts to ensure their safe return home amid the challenges posed by warfare in the region.
