YouTube Tests ‘Auto Speed’ & ‘On-the-Go’ Features to Upgrade Premium Playback Experience

The CSR Journal Magazine

YouTube is currently in the process of testing two innovative features aimed at improving user experience on its platform. These features are being made available to subscribers of YouTube Premium, a service that not only removes advertisements but also provides access to experimental functionalities. The newly introduced features include “Auto Speed,” which adjusts the playback speed of videos dynamically, and “On-the-Go,” a tool designed to simplify playback controls for users who are on the move.

The first feature, Auto Speed, utilises technology to manage the speed of video playback automatically. YouTube claims that this function is designed to save viewers time while ensuring that comprehension is not compromised. Users can find this option by accessing the playback speed control menu, where the Auto Speed selection is listed. However, it is important to note that this feature will be hidden for videos that do not support it.

Details on the On-the-Go Feature

The On-the-Go feature is specifically tailored to enhance the experience for audio-driven content, such as podcasts and talk shows. Its primary purpose is to facilitate easier control of video playback, minimising distractions that might arise from comments or other visual elements present on the screen. Users have the choice to activate this feature either manually or it can be triggered automatically.

For manual activation, users must open the settings gear icon located in the top right corner of the active video, then proceed to navigate to the “More” section followed by “Premium controls.” Alternatively, if the user’s device detects motion for at least 60 seconds while the video is being watched or listened to with the phone unlocked, the On-the-Go feature will activate automatically. This is intended to enhance usability during transit.

Initially, information indicates that the Auto Speed function is available on both Android and iOS platforms. However, while YouTube’s description of the On-the-Go feature states it is limited to Android users, reports suggest that it may also be accessible on iOS devices.

Testing Period and Legal Challenges Faced by YouTube

The aforementioned features began their testing phase last month, and users have until April 27, 2026, to explore these new functionalities. Following this period, YouTube will assess the feasibility of retaining both features or discontinuing them based on user feedback and performance metrics.

In a separate context, YouTube, along with Meta, has recently been held liable in a case concerning their platforms’ design, which allegedly contributed to addiction and harm among children. The ruling requires the companies to pay a total of $6 million to a plaintiff, a 20-year-old individual known only by the initials “KGM.” The plaintiff contended that her experiences with addictive features on these platforms resulted in negative impacts during her childhood. Notably, prior to the trial, TikTok and Snap Inc. reached settlements related to the same issue.

This legal ruling highlights the ongoing scrutiny that technology companies, including YouTube, are facing regarding the safety and wellbeing of younger users on their platforms. The financial settlement is indicative of the broader implications of accountability in the digital landscape.
