“President Won’t Abide by Terms if Strait of Hormuz Doesn’t Reopen” US Vice President JD Vance

The CSR Journal Magazine

US Vice President JD Vance has underscored the firm position of Washington regarding the ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. This follows Iran’s allegations that Israel has breached the terms of a temporary ceasefire. As Vance addressed reporters outside Air Force Two during his departure from Hungary, he clarified that Lebanon was not part of the ceasefire arrangement. He asserted that if Tehran fails to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, President Donald Trump “will not abide by the terms” of the agreement.

US Conditions on Ceasefire and Negotiations

While speaking to the media, Vance confirmed that there are indications the straits may begin to reopen. He emphasized that the ceasefire involves mutual negotiations, stating, “What we give is a ceasefire, and what they give is the reopening of the Straits. If we don’t see that happening, the President is not going to abide by our terms if the Iranians are not abiding by theirs.” Vance also made it clear that Iran mistakenly believed the ceasefire included Lebanon, a claim he refuted.

Focus on Nuclear Proliferation

Vance, who is representing the United States in talks with Iran in Islamabad, reiterated the administration’s commitment to curtailing Iran’s nuclear capabilities. He stressed that the US demands include a complete halt to Iran’s uranium enrichment activities. “We don’t want Iran to have the capacity to build a nuclear weapon,” he stated. He emphasized that the more concessions Iran is willing to offer, the more they could benefit from the ongoing negotiations, highlighting that President Trump “has all the cards here.”

Iran’s Response and International Concerns

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has issued a contrasting statement, indicating that the US must choose between maintaining the ceasefire or escalating conflicts through Israel. Araghchi’s remarks came as he warned that US actions are crucial for the future of the ceasefire. He condemned the violent incidents occurring in Lebanon, urging that global observers are closely monitoring the situation and awaiting the US’s adherence to its agreements.

White House Dismisses Lebanon’s Inclusion in Ceasefire

Amid these developments, the White House has reaffirmed its stance that Lebanon is not included in the ceasefire discussions. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that this message has been communicated to all relevant parties. Following recent statements from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who expressed support for the ceasefire and the US-led initiatives, the US continues to back Israel in its military engagements against Hezbollah.

Upcoming Diplomatic Engagement in Islamabad

As the United States and Iran prepare for direct talks in Islamabad this weekend, expectations are high for productive discussions aimed at concluding weeks of escalating hostilities. This meeting arises after a newly established two-week ceasefire agreement initiated between the two nations due to heightened conflict. The US delegation will be led by Vice President JD Vance, whereas Iranian Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf will head the Iranian side.

Ceasefire Implementation and Future Negotiations

This round of negotiations follows Trump’s temporary suspension of military actions against Iran and his announcement of a dual-side ceasefire, highlighting a 10-point proposal from Iran deemed acceptable. This diplomatic engagement is critical for stabilizing the region amid concerns over nuclear proliferation and ongoing military actions.
