Haridwar to Relocate 56 Meat Shops Amid Trader Protests

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Municipal Corporation of Haridwar has announced the relocation of meat shops from the Jwalapur area due to impending religious events. This decision was reached after a proposal for the shift was approved during a recent board meeting. Approximately 56 meat shops are expected to be established in the Sarai area as part of this initiative, aimed at accommodating the needs of local authorities during significant spiritual gatherings.

Haridwar Municipal Commissioner Nandan Kumar provided details on the decision. A formal ban on the sale of raw meat within the municipal area has been enacted, with modifications made to existing by-laws concerning the sale of such products. The new regulations will expand the scope of the ban, affecting areas where it previously did not apply, to ensure that all raw meat shops are shifted elsewhere.

Concerns Raised by Meat Traders

Despite the rationale behind the relocation, local meat traders have expressed substantial objection to the move. Many business owners, who have operated their shops for numerous years, contend that the new location is unsatisfactory and poses various challenges. They highlight that the area is distant from the city centre and surrounded by conditions they describe as unhygienic, including its proximity to a cremation ground.

One meat shop owner raised concerns about customer accessibility, stating that the inconvenience of travel could deter clients, particularly if local rickshaw services refuse to operate in the area due to traffic conditions. The owner specifically pointed out the nearby cremation ground, asserting that the nature of their business is incompatible with such a setting, further exacerbating fears of potential financial losses.

Another trader echoed these sentiments, emphasising the importance of geographic distance from places of worship and cremation grounds. This shop owner referenced a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Municipal Corporation, which stipulates that meat shops should operate at a considerable distance from temples, mosques, Gurudwaras, and cremation sites. Concerns have arisen regarding the adherence to these guidelines as outlined by local authorities.

Future Considerations for the Traders

The meat traders’ community is calling for improvements in the overall planning and organisation of the new market site. They are advocating for facilities to ensure that different types of meat are handled appropriately and safely and are seeking clarity on future operational procedures in light of the shift. The traders have also formally reached out to the District Magistrate with their concerns in the hope of finding a resolution that takes their challenges into account.

As the relocation process is set to move forward, the Municipal Corporation remains committed to implementing the changes in anticipation of the upcoming religious events, which attract large numbers of visitors to Haridwar. The situation continues to evolve as both the municipal authorities and the affected traders navigate this transition.

Ongoing discussions between the Municipal Corporation and the traders will be crucial in addressing the issues raised and ensuring that the new meat market operates effectively while adhering to the cultural sensitivities of the region. The outcome of these negotiations may determine the future landscape of meat trading in Haridwar as the date for the relocation approaches.
