The CSR Journal Magazine

The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that India has sent humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, which has been adversely impacted by severe flooding and earthquakes. In a communication shared on X, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the assortment of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) materials, which include kitchen sets, hygiene kits, plastic sheets, tarpaulins, and sleeping bags. Jaiswal emphasised India’s commitment to supporting the Afghan people during this difficult period.

According to local authorities, the toll from various natural disasters across 25 provinces in Afghanistan has reached 35 fatalities, with 52 individuals injured in just the last two days. The National Disaster Management Authority reported that torrential rains and floods have obliterated 131 homes while partially damaging an additional 650. Additionally, over 3,000 jeribs of agricultural land have suffered significant impact. Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, a spokesperson for the authorities, stated that preliminary assessments indicate nine deaths due to an earthquake affecting several provinces, including Kabul, Panjshir, Logar, Nangarhar, Laghman, and Nuristan.

Residents Call for Immediate Support and Relief Efforts

Local inhabitants affected by the calamities have reported severe losses and are urgently requesting humanitarian assistance. Abdul Razaq, a resident, shared that he and his family have set up a temporary shelter outside, which is inadequate as floodwaters have infiltrated their home. Another resident, Agha Jan, urged local authorities to not only deliver immediate assistance but also to enhance water management systems to mitigate further damage. He emphasized that urgent actions are required to create effective drainage channels.

Many residents continue to contend with the hazards posed by relentless rains and flooding, compelling them to live under unsafe circumstances without proper shelter. Khan Zaman, another local, explained that the rising water levels have compromised livestock shelters and blocked drainage channels, further exacerbating the situation as floodwaters inundate residential areas. The disaster management authority has initiated emergency aid deliveries to the affected population and is currently conducting ongoing relief operations. Rescue teams have also rescued several individuals from perilous situations across various provinces.

Details of Recent Earthquake in Afghanistan

A recent earthquake that struck Afghanistan reportedly led to the deaths of eight family members when their residence collapsed in the Gosfand Dara area of Kabul province. According to the US Geological Survey, the 5.8-magnitude earthquake occurred at approximately 8:42 PM local time at a depth of 186 kilometers (115 miles), with the epicenter located in Badakhshan province. Afghanistan is prone to seismic activity, particularly in the Hindu Kush region, which is situated at the convergence of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. Statistically, the country faces an average of 560 fatalities annually due to earthquakes.
